About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential client in the critical infrastructure sector seeking a Senior Kubernetes Platform Engineer for a long-term engagement in Stuttgart, Germany. This is a technically demanding role focused on building, advancing, and operating a Kubernetes-based platform on bare-metal infrastructure for business-critical applications.
The position combines platform automation, cloud-native integration, security, observability, and operational responsibility in a highly regulated environment. You'll work closely with platform architects and cross-functional teams to deliver a production-grade, largely automated infrastructure.
Start Date: October 2026
Location: Stuttgart (approximately 90% remote, with occasional on-site days)
Employment Type: Long-term contract engagement
Language Requirements: Native-level German and business-fluent English required
Responsibilities
- Translate platform requirements into actionable technical solutions in coordination with domain architects and stakeholder teams
- Build and advance a largely automated, reproducible Kubernetes-based platform on bare-metal infrastructure through to operational readiness and go-live
- Implement reusable platform functions for provisioning, configuration, and evolution of Kubernetes clusters, servers, and infrastructure components
- Develop, implement, test, and integrate Kubernetes controllers and operators for cluster and application deployment, server and network configuration, and applications without native GitOps capabilities
- Advance automated bare-metal and Kubernetes provisioning including hardware and OS lifecycle, cluster provisioning, and BMC interface integration
- Enhance GitOps and Infrastructure-as-Code automation solutions with comprehensive testing and integration procedures to reduce manual intervention
- Integrate external systems and infrastructure components via APIs, declarative interfaces, and controller-based mechanisms
- Design and implement observability for platform and applications including metrics, logs, traces, and alerting with cluster-internal and cross-cluster views and appropriate access separation
- Design and implement automated backup, restore, and recovery procedures for platform components, persistent volumes, and databases including external backup targets, verifiable restoration procedures, and concrete failure scenarios
- Design and implement high-availability measures and defined system behavior during failures to improve stability, recoverability, traceability, and security across cluster and security zone boundaries
- Design and technically implement security requirements through admission control, policy-based validation and mutation of resources, and additional hardening and threat-detection measures
- Plan and execute technological advancement of existing platform components to realize new platform requirements
- Analyze complex failure patterns across multiple technical layers and conduct or support restart and functional testing
- Support stable and secure platform operations including incident and fault resolution, restoration of regular operations, operational changes and adjustments, operational backup/restore/recovery procedures, go-live and hypercare phases, and technical usability during ongoing operations
- Perform upgrades, releases, patches, and other operational lifecycle measures as well as maintenance and adjustment of existing configurations
- Create and handover technical and operational documentation and conduct knowledge transfer and operational support
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 6 years of relevant operational experience in a Senior Platform Engineering role for Kubernetes-based platforms
- Experience in designing, technically implementing, integrating, and substantially advancing Kubernetes-based platforms
- Practical experience with automated and reproducible provisioning and lifecycle management of bare-metal systems, servers, and Kubernetes clusters
- Experience with bare-metal and Kubernetes automation as well as GitOps, Infrastructure as Code, and declarative or controller-based automation mechanisms
- Comprehensive practical experience in developing or substantially advancing Kubernetes controllers and/or operators that have been deployed to production
- Minimum 3 years of experience with Kubernetes Day-2 operations, lifecycle management, upgrades, and analysis and resolution of complex technical failures
- Experience designing and technically implementing observability for platforms and applications including metrics, logging, tracing, alerting, and cluster-internal and cross-cluster views
- Experience designing, automating, and practically verifying high-availability, backup, restore, and recovery procedures including defined failure scenarios and restoration testing
- Experience designing and technically implementing Kubernetes security, policy enforcement, admission control, policy-based validation and mutation of resources, and additional hardening and threat-detection measures
- Experience integrating external systems and technical interfaces via APIs, declarative interfaces, and comparable mechanisms
- Broad technical experience base and ability to independently work on complex and incompletely specified tasks across multiple technical layers to a production-ready solution and take ownership of results
- Experience in the energy sector, critical infrastructure, or a comparable regulated or security-critical environment
- Native-level German and business-fluent English (written and spoken)
- Completed degree in computer science, engineering, or comparable qualification
- Willingness to undergo security clearance procedures and pre-screening
- At least one personal reference in the DACH region and at least one personal reference related to platform engineering for a production Kubernetes-based infrastructure
- Availability from October or November 2026
- Willingness to use Atlassian Confluence and Jira as specified collaboration and documentation tools
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience developing Kubernetes controllers and/or operators using the Go programming language
- Ability to present technical content in a structured, understandable, and convincing manner
- Strong communication skills and ability to clearly convey complex technical matters
- Strong ability to collaborate and interact constructively in technical teams
