Senior Embedded (ARM) Engineer – Quantum Computing (m/w/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential quantum technology organization seeking a Senior Embedded (ARM) Engineer to own the real-time firmware that drives their advanced control systems. You will work on next-generation platforms where control electronics are integrated into highly specialized chips. Your role sits at the critical intersection between hardware pulse generation and higher-level experimental software—timing is not just important, it is the product.

In this position, you will:

• Own embedded firmware architecture and implementation on ARM-based control platforms, from initial design through on-hardware debugging
• Develop and maintain real-time software layers coordinating pulse sequencing, precise timing, and data flow across integrated control systems
• Write and maintain low-level drivers and board support packages the hardware depends upon
• Guarantee deterministic, low-latency behavior under hard real-time constraints
• Lead firmware bring-up in collaboration with electronics and physics teams, debugging at the boundary where software meets signal
• Define firmware architecture and engineering practices including build, test, and release processes as systems mature
• Contribute to interface design between embedded layers and the broader software stack to ensure experiments execute correctly

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 5+ years of professional embedded software development for real-time or timing-critical systems
• Deep expertise in C (and ideally C++) on ARM platforms, working close to hardware
• Experience with bare-metal and/or RTOS environments, with clear understanding of appropriate use cases
• Comfort reading schematics and datasheets, debugging real hardware with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG
• Strong grasp of real-time concepts: interrupts, DMA, timing, concurrency, and determinism
• Proven track record bringing up firmware on new hardware, not only maintaining existing systems
• Ability to collaborate effectively with experimental physicists and engineers, translating physical requirements into robust firmware
• Strong adaptability and quick learning mindset
• Good proficiency in English (written and spoken)

Bonus qualifications:

• Experience with highly integrated SoCs, particularly ARM+FPGA platforms such as Xilinx Zynq or RFSoC
• Working alongside FPGA/digital-electronics engineers at the software–gateware boundary
• Rust for embedded systems
• Embedded Linux on ARM (Cortex-A), including driver and kernel-module work
• Signal processing or control-loop implementation on embedded targets
• Experience with high-speed data acquisition or precision timing systems
• Familiarity with laboratory, scientific, or measurement instrumentation
• Prior experience with quantum computing or other deep-tech domains
