Senior Data Scientist – Operational Research

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential logistics technology client in their search for a Senior Data Scientist specializing in Operational Research. This is a hybrid position based in London, working within a fast-growing organization that is transforming how last-mile delivery operates at scale.

Our client processes thousands of parcels daily, and every routing, pricing, and assignment decision directly impacts network efficiency. As the first Operational Research Scientist focused on their last-mile marketplace, you will design and build the optimization models and solvers that power these critical operational decisions in production.

This is a senior individual contributor role within a cross-functional squad that includes Data Scientists, Analysts, and Engineers. You will report to a Staff Decision Systems Architect and work on production systems that make thousands of decisions every day.

Responsibilities

• Translate operational requirements into optimization models for scheduling, assignment, and pricing challenges
• Develop and evaluate solution approaches using mathematical programming and meta-heuristics
• Design bespoke algorithms, heuristics, and solvers tailored to unique operational problems
• Ensure solutions are scalable and adaptable as the operation grows
• Benchmark and evaluate solution performance against business objectives
• Collaborate with engineering teams to productionize solutions into automated daily processes
• Partner with analytics to monitor daily performance and proactively evolve models based on real-world outcomes
• Work hands-on within the network to understand the impact of your optimization work

What We're Looking For

• Relevant operational research experience with heuristics and/or mathematical programming
• Proficiency coding in Python, Rust, Julia, C++, or similar performance-oriented languages
• Demonstrated ability solving large-scale optimization problems
• Experience working on production systems with continuous learning and iteration
• Deep problem-solving skills with the ability to craft bespoke solutions for unique decision dynamics
• Enthusiasm for cross-functional collaboration in a technical team environment
• Passion for understanding how your work affects end users—couriers, retailers, and consumers
• Comfort with a fast-paced, high-ownership work culture
• Advanced degree in operations research, mathematics, computer science, or related field (preferred)
