About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential energy technology organization seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join their Flexibility team in London. This is a greenfield opportunity to establish foundational data capabilities for a team working at the cutting edge of energy system transformation.
As the team's first dedicated data engineer, you'll build scalable data infrastructure that enables products serving millions of users while supporting renewable energy integration and grid optimization. You'll work in a flat, agile environment where innovation and autonomy are core values.
Responsibilities
- Establish the team's data engineering capability and lead technical direction as their first full-time data engineer
- Build greenfield data engineering systems in AWS, providing a foundational layer for high-quality data processing and warehousing
- Design and implement scalable databases and APIs to support future projects across multiple teams
- Interface with the existing data warehouse built on Databricks, maintaining and developing critical data applications
- Upskill backend engineers with data expertise and act as a force multiplier on engineering impact
- Drive architectural improvements for long-term global scalability, robustness, and operational efficiency
- Champion knowledge sharing and documentation to strengthen platform effectiveness
- Represent the team within the cross-functional data community
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Strong proficiency with SQL, Python, and the AWS data stack
- Ability to translate needs into solid requirements and design scalable solutions
- Quick learner who can understand new domain areas and visualize data effectively
- Team-oriented mindset with enthusiasm for ownership across diverse projects and tools
Highly Valued:
- Experience building efficient, scalable databases and APIs (Django, FastAPI)
- Proficiency with Kubernetes, Docker, Spark, and DataOps monitoring tools (DataDog, Grafana, Prometheus)
- Experience with Airflow for orchestration
- Familiarity with dbt for pipeline modeling
- Energy domain knowledge
Technical Stack: Python, Databricks Spark, dbt, SQL, Streamlit, Airflow, CircleCI, Parquet/Delta on S3, Terraform, Kubernetes, Postgres/Aurora, Django
Location: London, UK (hybrid preferred; fully remote considered for UK-based candidates)
