Senior Backend Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their growing technology team. This position is based in Cardiff and offers the opportunity to work on large-scale distributed systems that serve millions of users daily.

Our client operates a modern engineering organization of several hundred technologists who design and build their platform entirely in-house. Engineers collaborate across product, data, security, and operations teams to solve complex technical challenges in the financial services space.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain backend services using strongly-typed languages in a microservices architecture
• Collaborate with cross-functional squad members including product managers, designers, data analysts, and frontend engineers
• Write resilient, distributed systems code that handles high-volume transaction processing
• Make data-informed decisions that directly impact customer outcomes
• Participate in system design discussions and architectural decisions
• Support and maintain services across the full software development lifecycle
• Work with modern cloud infrastructure and container orchestration platforms

What We're Looking For

• Strong experience working on backend systems for technology products
• Proficiency with strongly-typed languages such as Go, Java, C, or Scala
• Interest in distributed systems and building resilient software at scale
• Product mindset with focus on customer outcomes and data-driven decision making
• Comfort working in environments with ambiguity and evolving requirements
• Experience with microservices architectures and asynchronous messaging patterns
• Familiarity with cloud platforms, containerization, and orchestration tools is beneficial

The technology stack includes Go for application code, Cassandra for data storage, Kafka for messaging, Kubernetes and Docker for orchestration, and AWS/GCP infrastructure. Our client does not require prior experience with these specific technologies and provides comprehensive onboarding.
