Senior AI Engineer, Location AI

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential geospatial technology organization seeking a Senior AI Engineer to join their Location AI team. This is a remote position based anywhere in Germany, working with cutting-edge AI systems that power location-aware applications used by millions of developers and organizations worldwide.

This role is defined by skill rather than product boundary. You'll own the technical design and delivery of multi-component AI systems, working across teams where your expertise meets the highest-priority problems in search, places data, navigation intelligence, and developer platform work. You should expect to move between teams and tech stacks as business needs evolve.

Responsibilities

• Define product behavior, build measurement frameworks, and create evaluation systems for non-deterministic AI behavior. Formulate hypotheses and validate them with data.
• Design what constitutes a correct result for given inputs and states, assembling datasets from real usage or hand-written test cases, and gate changes on regression results.
• Run continuous evaluation of APIs, SDKs, data representations, and reference applications from the end-user perspective—whether developer, agent, or consumer.
• Own MVP delivery against agreed technical designs, balancing technical perfection with shipping useful increments.
• Build data pipelines and surrounding tooling: ingestion, conflation, entity resolution, quality checks, and batch/streaming jobs that keep large datasets current.
• Track external datasets, models, and benchmarks from published research and open-source releases. Evaluate fit for constraints and decide build-versus-adopt tradeoffs.
• Design feedback loops so product usage generates data that improves the system. Instrument systems so failures arrive with reproducible context.
• Design boundaries between models and the tools they call. Build or improve model harnesses, deciding what models handle versus delegate.
• Work to latency and cost targets per request through streaming, partial results, caching, model routing, and prompt optimization.
• Build internal harnesses and tools (CLI, MCP, and others) for rapid iteration, sharing generalizable components across teams.
• Raise the bar through code and design review, elevating team members on evaluation practices.
• Participate in on-call rotation to ensure 24/7 system availability, including immediate response outside normal hours when needed.

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline
• 5+ years of software engineering experience with production ownership of services, pipelines, or SDKs
• 2+ years shipping LLM-backed features to real users in systems with error budgets, on-call rotations, and customers who notice regressions
• Data engineering depth: SQL, at least one distributed processing framework, and experience with pipelines where data correctness matters more than speed
• Fluency with tool calling and agent orchestration, including failure modes: stale context, hallucinated arguments, silent partial success, unbounded loops
• Strong Python or TypeScript skills, with comfort reading code in multiple languages
• Direct experience designing evaluations for non-deterministic systems—you can describe a dataset you built and the failure it caught
• Working knowledge of multiple agent harnesses with informed opinions about their weaknesses
• Experience diagnosing latency in distributed request paths
• Comfort with ambiguity and judgment to ship focused solutions while broader approaches remain unclear
• Legal authorization to work in Germany

Nice to Have:

• Geospatial data experience: routing, geocoding, POI or address data, OpenStreetMap, or conflation of overlapping sources
• Public API or SDK design experience for developers you never directly interact with
• Experience building against MCP or similar tool transports
• Experience running evaluations in CI with commercial or custom-built harnesses
• Automotive, in-vehicle infotainment, CarPlay, or Android Auto experience
• Voice pipeline experience: streaming ASR, TTS, barge-in, endpointing, wake word
• Work under constrained compute, offline, or intermittent connectivity
• Experience operating a product through its first external integrations
