Robotics & Automation Project Engineer

Formic is hiring a Robotics & Automation Project Engineer to join our team in Charlotte, NC. This full-time position supports the performance and reliability of advanced robotic systems deployed across manufacturing facilities in the region.

About the Role

This position blends hands-on technical support with strategic system optimization. You'll diagnose and resolve issues affecting deployed automation systems, implement improvements that boost reliability across our fleet, and work alongside cross-functional teams to strengthen system performance in demanding production environments. Your focus will be ensuring that automation systems consistently deliver measurable results for customers.

Core Duties

• Identify root causes of automation system failures and implement solutions to minimize production disruption
• Develop and execute maintenance strategies—both preventive and condition-based—to improve system reliability
• Lead performance improvement initiatives, including hardware refinement and software optimization
• Review production data and system diagnostics to uncover performance patterns and gaps
• Provide technical support via remote channels, responding to service requests and guiding troubleshooting when necessary
• Conduct onsite support activities across the Charlotte region for routine and specialized maintenance
• Work across Product, Deployment, and Engineering to align equipment configurations and improve system consistency
• Maintain detailed system records, including configuration documentation, maintenance history, and change logs
• Handle complex technical escalations and provide mentorship to technicians on troubleshooting methodology
• Verify systems meet safety requirements, internal quality standards, and applicable regulations
• Coordinate with equipment suppliers to enhance parts availability, diagnostic tools, and technical resources

Skills & Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in manufacturing automation or industrial robotics
• Demonstrated competency programming PLCs, robotic controllers, and industrial automation systems
• Working knowledge of robotic systems, motion control, and automated manufacturing platforms
• Proven ability to troubleshoot failures spanning mechanical, electrical, and control systems
• Proficiency reading electrical schematics and technical drawings
• Prior work in manufacturing environments where system uptime is critical
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting capabilities with structured problem-solving methods
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
• Capability to work both self-directed and in collaborative cross-functional teams
• Flexibility to travel up to 50% based on business requirements
• Valid driver's license and ability to support local regional travel

Additional experience in high-volume manufacturing, standardizing automation systems across multiple sites, or implementing data-driven maintenance and predictive monitoring approaches is a plus.
