Formic seeks an experienced Robotics & Automation Project Engineer for its Atlanta, GA operations, where you'll drive the reliability and performance of deployed industrial automation systems serving manufacturing clients. Role Overview
Formic's Fleet Operations team manages a distributed network of deployed robotic systems across active manufacturing facilities. In this role, you'll serve as a technical leader—responsible for both emergency response to system failures and proactive work to prevent problems before they occur. You will analyze system performance patterns, oversee equipment improvements, coordinate across engineering and deployment teams, and mentor technicians on maintenance best practices. Your decisions and actions directly impact customer uptime, production gains, and long-term customer relationships.
Your Responsibilities
In this full-time position, you will:
- Rapidly diagnose and resolve automation failures when they occur, restoring production with minimal delay
- Build and refine maintenance and monitoring protocols that reduce failures before they impact production
- Oversee fleet-wide improvement projects, including equipment replacements and software enhancements
- Extract insights from system performance data to uncover patterns and underlying issues
- Serve as the escalation point for complex technical challenges requiring expert troubleshooting
- Deliver technical guidance remotely to resolve problems reported by customers and field teams
- Conduct hands-on maintenance and inspections at customer facilities within your region
- Work with internal teams in Product and Engineering to ensure systems are built consistently and perform reliably
- Keep detailed records of maintenance work, system modifications, and troubleshooting outcomes
- Build technical knowledge among field staff and supporting teams
- Uphold safety and compliance standards throughout your work
- Interface with equipment manufacturers and suppliers to solve problems and improve support
Who We're Looking For
You bring:
- At least 5 years working directly with manufacturing automation or industrial robot systems
- Proficiency programming industrial controllers, robot systems, and automation hardware
- Working knowledge of industrial robotic equipment, drive systems, and manufacturing automation
- Proven ability to diagnose problems across mechanical, electrical, and software control systems
- Comfort reading and interpreting electrical drawings and technical schematics
- Background working in manufacturing environments where downtime is expensive
- A systematic approach to problem-solving and troubleshooting
- Strong ability to explain technical concepts both verbally and in writing
- Comfort both working independently and as part of a team
- Ability to travel as much as 50% of the time for customer support
- A valid driver's license
Desired qualifications include experience in high-volume manufacturing, managing system standardization across multiple sites, or working with predictive maintenance systems.
