Robotics & Automation Project Engineer

Formic seeks a Robotics & Automation Project Engineer to join our operations team in San Antonio, TX. As a full-time member of the Fleet Operations organization, you will manage technical support, troubleshooting, and reliability for deployed automation systems serving manufacturers across the region.

What This Role Involves

You will serve as a core technical resource for Formic's expanding base of active manufacturing installations. This position sits at the intersection of field support and engineering—combining rapid-response troubleshooting with systematic performance improvements. Your core mission: ensure industrial robotic systems maintain peak uptime and efficiency in live production environments, while identifying patterns that drive fleet-wide reliability gains.

Responsibilities

• Identify root causes of automation system failures and restore production with minimal downtime
• Develop and execute preventative maintenance schedules and predictive reliability strategies
• Lead cross-site system improvement projects, including hardware configuration updates and software enhancements
• Extract and analyze performance metrics and operational data to spot systemic weaknesses
• Provide remote assistance by handling support tickets, directing troubleshooting workflows, and escalating to field teams as needed
• Execute in-person maintenance visits and technical support within your local region
• Work with Product, Engineering, and Deployment teams to harmonize system designs and improve deployment repeatability
• Author and maintain technical procedures, service records, and change documentation
• Serve as the expert resource for challenging technical cases that affect multiple customer systems
• Coach field technicians on diagnostic methodology and system health practices
• Confirm all work meets safety codes, internal quality standards, and applicable regulatory requirements
• Collaborate with equipment suppliers to expand spare parts availability and enhance troubleshooting capabilities

What You Bring

• At least 5 years hands-on experience in manufacturing automation or industrial robotic systems
• Demonstrated expertise programming PLCs, robotic controllers, and industrial automation platforms
• Solid knowledge of robotic motion systems, mechanical automation, and production equipment
• Practical experience troubleshooting failures in mechanical assemblies, electrical circuits, and control logic
• Proficiency reading and interpreting electrical schematics and technical documentation
• Background working in production environments where equipment uptime directly impacts output
• Strong analytical and methodical problem-solving approach
• Clear and professional communication, both written and verbal
• Capacity to work autonomously while coordinating effectively across teams
• Willingness to travel locally and regionally up to 50% of the time
• Valid driver's license and ability to manage field travel
