About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential manufacturing client in Bradford who designs precision mechanical hardware and integrated systems. They are investing in their technical engineering capability and need a Product Design Engineer focused on sustaining engineering, product improvement and engineering change management.
This is a permanent, full-time position based in Bradford with one day per week homeworking currently available. You will take technical ownership of existing products, investigating issues, developing engineering solutions and leading the implementation of design improvements across a released product portfolio.
Responsibilities
- Take technical design ownership of engineering issues, improvements and change requests relating to released mechanical hardware and system products
- Investigate product failures, recurring issues, customer complaints and warranty matters; develop robust corrective engineering solutions and product redesigns
- Redesign components and assemblies to improve performance, reliability, durability or cost while assessing impact on mating parts and overall system performance
- Perform tolerance analysis and stack-ups to resolve fit, function or performance issues
- Lead the engineering content of product change requests through the formal engineering change process
- Create and update 3D CAD models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, specifications and Bills of Materials for product changes
- Own and maintain technical documentation for released products including manuals, technical bulletins and product information
- Maintain accurate product data and configurations within industry software including Logikal, ensuring profiles, hardware and product changes are correctly reflected
- Support product changes arising from supplier changes, material substitutions, component obsolescence or manufacturing requirements
- Identify and progress proactive product improvement and value engineering opportunities
- Collaborate with compliance and testing functions to support validation required for product changes
- Liaise with customers, partners and suppliers on technical issues, investigating concerns and developing appropriate solutions
- Contribute to larger product improvements and new development projects according to business priorities
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Degree, HND or equivalent recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering or closely related discipline (mandatory)
- Professional experience in mechanical design, product design or product development engineering
- Strong capability in parametric 3D CAD and manufacturing-ready engineering drawings
- Experience designing and modifying physical products or components for manufacture
- Strong understanding of Design for Manufacture, dimensional tolerances, engineering fits and tolerance stack-up analysis
- Practical understanding of mechanical engineering, materials and relevant manufacturing processes
- Strong mechanical problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Ability to progress engineering work independently while collaborating effectively across functions
Particularly Valuable:
- Experience with fenestration, windows, doors, aluminium architectural systems or moving door systems
- Mechanical or architectural hardware experience (hinges, rollers, guides, handles, locks)
- Small precision components involving aluminium extrusions, castings, mouldings or CNC-machined parts
- Product sustaining engineering, continuous improvement or engineering change management
- Failure investigation, corrective redesign, value engineering or component substitution
- Product testing, validation, tooling or supplier development
- Autodesk Inventor strongly preferred; experienced SolidWorks, Creo or comparable CAD users also considered
- AutoCAD and ERP experience beneficial
- Experience producing controlled technical documentation or maintaining product data within Logikal or comparable industry software

- Able to balance product performance, quality, manufacturability and cost
