About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential manufacturing client in Bradford who is expanding their technical engineering team. Our client designs and manufactures architectural hardware systems for UK and international markets, and they're investing significantly in product development and global growth.
This is a newly created Mechanical Design Engineer position that will play a key role in developing hardware solutions—both in collaboration with external partners and as proprietary systems for selected markets. You'll take mechanical components and assemblies from initial concept through detailed design, prototyping, testing, and production release.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and product concepts for precision hardware systems
- Create accurate 3D CAD models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, specifications, and Bills of Materials
- Take designs from concept through detailed engineering, prototype, testing, validation, and production release
- Work with external partners and systems houses to understand technical requirements and develop integrated hardware solutions
- Carry out tolerance analysis and stack-ups to ensure reliable fit, function, and manufacturability
- Perform engineering calculations and analysis to validate design decisions and product performance
- Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFM/DFA) principles across machining, extrusion, die casting, injection moulding, pressing, and mechanical assembly
- Collaborate with Production, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to resolve manufacturing, tooling, quality, and cost considerations
- Support prototype builds, product testing, and structured investigation of development issues
- Maintain drawing revisions and engineering change records with proper control and validation
- Value-engineer existing and new products without compromising performance or quality
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to colleagues, customers, partners, and suppliers
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Degree, HND, or equivalent recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, or closely related discipline (formal qualification is mandatory)
- Professional experience in mechanical design, product design, or product development engineering
- Strong capability in parametric 3D CAD and creating manufacturing-ready engineering drawings
- Experience designing physical products or components for manufacture, not just CAD modelling
- Practical understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, and manufacturing processes
- Strong grasp of Design for Manufacture, dimensional tolerances, engineering fits, and tolerance stack-up analysis
- Methodical problem-solving skills and excellent attention to detail
- Ability to progress engineering work independently while contributing to a wider team
- Confidence communicating technical information with customers and partners
Particularly Valuable:
- Experience in fenestration, windows, doors, architectural systems, or moving door mechanisms
- Background with mechanical or architectural hardware (hinges, rollers, guides, handles, locks)
- Work with small precision components involving aluminium extrusions, castings, mouldings, or CNC-machined parts
- Product testing, New Product Introduction, value engineering, tooling, or supplier development experience
- Autodesk Inventor strongly preferred; experienced SolidWorks, Creo, or comparable CAD users also considered
- AutoCAD and ERP system experience beneficial
Personal Attributes:
- Practical and curious about how mechanical products and systems work
- Able to balance product performance, manufacturability, quality, and cost
- Credible and confident in technical discussions with stakeholders
- Collaborative, self-motivated, and comfortable owning defined projects
- Enthusiastic about joining a business investing in development and growth
