Plasma Spectroscopy Diagnostician

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fusion energy organization in Munich that is developing next-generation stellarator technology. They are seeking a Plasma Spectroscopy Diagnostician to lead the design and implementation of critical spectroscopic diagnostic systems for their experimental device.

This is a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge fusion diagnostics, collaborating with physicists, engineers, and software developers to advance clean energy technology. You will own the complete lifecycle of spectroscopic diagnostic systems from initial conception through operational deployment.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and build of spectroscopic diagnostics to measure spatial profiles of ion temperature, impurity concentration, and plasma flow
• Develop detailed diagnostic specifications for charge exchange emission spectroscopy, crystal X-ray spectrometry, and wide-band spectroscopic monitoring systems
• Collaborate with engineering teams to establish robust implementation plans for each diagnostic system
• Manage the full product lifecycle: design, procurement, build, testing, installation, commissioning, calibration, operation, and maintenance
• Oversee work packages and coordinate with internal teams or external subcontractors to ensure successful completion
• Work across disciplines including plasma physics, optics, software, and mechanical integration

What We're Looking For

• Master's degree or higher in physics, engineering, or equivalent practical experience
• Hands-on experience using high-resolution spectrometers
• Prior work on at least one spectroscopic diagnostic instrument for large infrastructure (accelerator, telescope, laser facility, or fusion device)
• Strong knowledge of geometric optics and light propagation in optical systems
• Working knowledge of Python software development and modern toolchains (uv, git, etc.)
• Experience designing and building spectroscopic systems for plasma devices (preferred)
• Familiarity with optical design software for ray-tracing (preferred)
