About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential sports betting and gaming organization seeking a Data Engineer to join their growing Edinburgh team. Our client operates at significant scale, delivering data-driven products and experiences to millions of users. This role sits at the intersection of software engineering and data applications, focusing on building REST API endpoints that provide fraud detection recommendations based on data pipelines and machine learning models.

As a Data Engineer, you'll contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of reliable data applications while collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders to support high-impact use cases. Responsibilities

Build and Maintain Data Applications

• Design, build, and maintain scalable Python Flask API applications or similar frameworks to achieve low latency response times
• Develop batch and stream data ingestion pipelines and applications leveraging SQL databases like PostgreSQL or NoSQL/Redis databases
• Implement REST API endpoints on Kubernetes clusters using API gateways
• Ensure API responses are reliable, accurate, and delivered in a timely manner
• Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code and test cases using Python, SQL, and optionally PySpark
• Work with containerization and Kubernetes deployment tooling

Collaborate Across Teams

• Partner with senior engineers in code reviews, design discussions, planning sessions, and team ceremonies
• Work with data analysts, data scientists, and product managers to understand requirements and deliver actionable data solutions
• Translate business questions into engineering tasks and contribute to technical planning
• Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and retrospectives as part of an agile team

Quality and Operations

• Monitor applications and troubleshoot issues in a timely, systematic manner
• Implement data quality checks and contribute to observability and testing practices
• Document data sources, transformations, and architecture decisions to support long-term maintainability

What We're Looking For

• Strong software engineering skills with experience building scalable Python applications (Flask or similar frameworks)
• Understanding of REST API development and implementation
• Experience with both SQL databases (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL/Redis databases
• Knowledge of batch and stream data ingestion patterns
• Familiarity with containerization and Kubernetes deployment
• Experience with API gateways and low-latency application design
• Proficiency in Python and SQL; PySpark knowledge is a plus
• Understanding of data quality checks and testing practices
• Strong collaboration skills and experience working in agile teams
• Interest in data applications, analytics, and machine learning use cases
• Commitment to writing clean, documented, and maintainable code
