OPEX101: Scrum Master Jira

JerseySTEM seeks an experienced Scrum Master to lead Agile transformation initiatives across our teams in the United States. This full-time pro-bono role supports our mission to expand equitable STEM education and career access for underserved middle school girls in New Jersey through structured, collaborative teamwork.

What This Role Involves

As a Scrum Master at JerseySTEM, you'll facilitate Agile practices and help teams execute on transformational goals. You'll be a servant leader who champions continuous improvement, removes blockers, and fosters psychological safety within your team. This role demands both technical familiarity with Agile frameworks and genuine commitment to mentorship. You'll work with volunteer professionals who bring diverse expertise to our gender-equity mission, requiring patience, communication clarity, and adaptability.

Your Responsibilities

• Facilitate weekly or daily Scrum meetings for assigned teams, ensuring focus and structured decision-making.
• Author user stories with detailed descriptions and acceptance criteria to clarify work items.
• Manage and prioritize the product backlog, keeping teams aligned on objectives.
• Oversee Kanban or Sprint board health through weekly reviews and proactive monitoring.
• Support team adoption of Jira and reinforce task-tracking discipline across all members.
• Model open communication practices and create psychological safety for team participation.
• Mentor team members through obstacles, coaching them toward stronger collaboration and ownership.
• Identify systemic improvements and drive implementation of Agile best practices across sprints.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with Jira, Kanban boards, Sprint methodologies, and Slack.
• Proven strength in communication, analytical thinking, mentoring, and structured problem-solving.
• Certified Scrum Master (CSM) certification or equivalent Agile training (preferred).
• Availability for minimum 4–6 hours per week over at least six months.

All roles—including this Scrum Master position—are volunteer, unpaid opportunities. Membership requires a minimum six-month, six-hour-per-week commitment plus a $100 refundable deposit (waived for K–12 educators, retirees, veterans, interns, and students). You'll collaborate with passionate professionals who share our vision of transforming pathways for girls in STEM.
