Manager, Formulation Development (Analytics)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential biotherapeutics organization in Cambridge, UK, seeking an experienced formulation scientist to join their team in a leadership capacity. This is a hands-on, laboratory-based role that combines deep scientific expertise with responsibility for project delivery, client relationships, and team development. The position is ideal for a scientist who values remaining close to bench work while taking accountability for high-quality execution and mentoring emerging talent.

You will lead client-facing formulation development projects across a diverse portfolio, serving as a scientific authority for formulation strategy, experimental design, data interpretation, and risk assessment. In parallel, you will provide day-to-day leadership, supporting workload planning, reviewing documentation, and coaching scientists to develop their technical and professional capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage formulation development projects, ensuring robust data generation and on-time delivery to client specifications
• Design, plan, and oversee routine and complex formulation and analytical studies, including development of novel or specialized techniques where required
• Critically analyze and interpret experimental data generated by yourself and team members
• Take ownership of client deliverables including study plans, data packages, technical reports, and presentations
• Participate actively in client meetings, contributing scientific insight and clear communication of results
• Manage workload and oversee work schedules and priorities of junior scientists and direct reports
• Provide scientific supervision, offering guidance and constructive feedback to maintain quality and compliance standards
• Review laboratory notebooks, data, and reports produced by team members
• Coach and mentor scientists to support technical development, problem-solving skills, and professional growth
• Author and review quality and controlled documents in line with regulatory expectations
• Contribute to development of new technologies, methodologies, or service offerings
• Provide technical input into proposals, standard study designs, and work plans

What We're Looking For

• PhD in life sciences (Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences) or equivalent relevant experience
• 5+ years of industrial experience in protein formulation development and/or protein analytical characterization
• Demonstrated experience planning and leading scientific projects in a client-facing or commercial environment
• Experience supervising, coaching, or mentoring scientists, or clear readiness to step into a people management role
• Strong understanding of analytical techniques relevant to biotherapeutic development, such as SE-HPLC, IEX, CE-SDS, and icIEF
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to review high-quality reports and present complex data clearly
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive, problem-solving approach
• Experience with liquid biologics formulation for intravenous and sub-cutaneous administration preferred
• Familiarity with high-concentration drug product development is advantageous
