About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential biotechnology organization in London that is building laboratory infrastructure at the intersection of AI and biological research. Our talent team is searching for a Lab Operations Manager to take full ownership of the physical operations of a growing research facility.
This is a hands-on, on-site role where you will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the lab—everything from consumables and stock management to equipment servicing, supplier relationships, and safety compliance. You will be the person scientists turn to when something is missing, broken, or delayed.
What makes this role distinctive is the focus on data provenance and systems development. Every experiment carries a detailed record of materials, lot numbers, and conditions, and you will help define the systems that capture this information. You will also work closely with software teams to implement a fully barcoded inventory and tracking system, specifying requirements from the lab floor up.
Responsibilities
- Run day-to-day lab operations including consumables, stock control, goods receiving, cold chain management, equipment servicing and calibration, purchasing, waste streams, and safety records
- Own the goods-in process: receiving, booking in, storing, and recording every delivery accurately
- Map material flow through the lab and build an accurate inventory picture to support a fully barcoded tracking system
- Implement and manage a working inventory and reorder system with minimum levels based on real consumption data
- Collaborate with software and science teams to define barcode and labeling schemes, scan points, and workflows that capture provenance automatically
- Ensure every sample, plate, reagent, and consumable lot is tracked via barcode, creating audit trails that meet data quality requirements
- Maintain equipment records, asset registers, and safety documentation
- Develop systems and processes that scale with the lab's growth and support autonomous workflows
What We're Looking For
Must have:
- Two or more years running a lab or comparable physical operation, with hands-on accountability for results
- Practical stock control experience: goods in, inventory records, reorder points, stock counts that reconcile
- Experience buying from suppliers: raising orders, comparing quotes, managing lead times
- Hands-on experience with barcoded or scanned stock systems, including troubleshooting when processes break down
- Lab environment experience including cold storage, hazardous waste, containment, and controlled materials
- Familiarity with the rhythm and consumables of working labs in biotech, pharma, university research, manufacturing, or diagnostics
- Ability to distinguish between systems that work on paper and systems that work in practice
Nice to have:
- Health and safety training such as IOSH
- Experience developing or co-developing barcode systems for autonomous lab workflows
- Background working with software development teams to implement tracking and inventory solutions
This role is on-site five days a week in London. You will report to a member of the scientific staff and work closely with protein science teams, functional genomics teams, and engineers building the tracking system.
