About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential academic research institution in the Île-de-France region for a 12-month fixed-term research engineer position focused on reactive synthesis and automata theory. This role sits at the intersection of formal methods, controller synthesis, and machine learning, offering the opportunity to advance both theoretical foundations and practical applications of correct-by-construction systems.

Our client is seeking a skilled researcher to contribute to cutting-edge work in reactive synthesis, particularly the generation of controllers from LTL formulas, and explore applications in neighboring disciplines such as constrained reinforcement learning.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research in reactive synthesis and related automata-theoretic techniques
• Design and develop algorithms for formula translation, controller optimization, and synthesis pipelines
• Contribute to research contracts and collaborative projects with academic and industrial partners
• Apply formal methods to guide machine learning, including formal supervisors for reinforcement learning
• Author and co-author publications on formal methods research
• Present research findings at workshops and conferences
• Engage with partner organizations to identify shared research interests
• Maintain close relationships with academic institutions, research centers, and industry collaborators

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications (one of the following):

• PhD obtained within the last three years, or
• Master's degree (Bac+5) or equivalent, or
• Bachelor's degree plus four years (Bac+4 + 4 years experience), or
• Three-year degree plus six years (Bac+3 + 6 years experience), or
• Two-year degree plus ten years (Bac+2 + 10 years experience)

Essential skills:

• Fluency in English (written and spoken)
• Deep scientific knowledge of formal methods, automata theory, and formal languages
• Strong expertise in algorithm design and analysis
• Proficiency in Python and C++ ecosystems
• Experience with software development and engineering best practices
• Excellent scientific communication skills

Preferred experience:

• Background in industrial system control
• Experience developing industrial applications
• Teaching experience in higher education
• Familiarity with Windows systems

Pay and Benefits

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract (CDD) based in Palaiseau, France. The indicative salary range is €34,000–€40,000 gross annual (before variable annual bonus), depending on profile and experience. Public sector positions in France benefit from reduced employee social charges.
