Head of Design

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential legal technology organization in their search for a Head of Design. This is a rare opportunity to lead design at a high-growth B2B AI platform that's transforming how complex professional workflows operate at scale.

Our client has raised significant Series B funding and serves thousands of professionals at leading firms. The product is live, trusted, and scaling across the UK and US. Your challenge won't be building from scratch—it will be making an established product significantly better: cleaner, faster, and genuinely easier to trust as it scales.

You'll report directly to the CTO and join the product engineering leadership team. Your starting point is the product strategy and growth ambition. From there, you'll set the design agenda, lead a small team of three designers, and shape how the function grows.

Responsibilities

• Lead from the product engineering leadership table, bringing strategic design perspective to business challenges and product decisions
• Assess the product, users, and business context to set design priorities across information architecture, interaction design, design systems, user research, and AI interface patterns
• Define AI-native design standards: how users trust AI outputs, how reasoning is presented for review, how agentic behaviour feels controllable to accountable professionals
• Translate product realities into a sharper design mandate and challenge existing assumptions when evidence demands it
• Build and scale the design function through a high-growth phase, investing in team development and establishing clear ownership
• Shape interaction patterns that distinguish the product in market and hold teams accountable for experience quality
• Connect design decisions to business outcomes including adoption, retention, and revenue

What We're Looking For

Essential experience:

• Significant experience leading product design at senior level in a scaling B2B tech company, with real depth across the design discipline
• Track record sitting at the product leadership table and influencing business decisions beyond delivering a design agenda
• Experience scaling a design function through high-growth phases with judgment about what process and structure matters at each stage
• Designed AI-native products—not tools with AI bolted on—working through explainability, trust, agentic UX, and confidence signals
• Designed for expert professional users who know their domain deeply, without condescending or oversimplifying
• Strong commercial instincts connecting design decisions to business outcomes
• Ability to translate product context into design strategy and challenge priorities when evidence demands it
• Experience leading through a design team, setting direction and standards without owning every deliverable

Valued additional experience:

• Direct experience of Series B to Series C growth journey
• Built a design function from early-stage base rather than inherited one
• Familiarity with legal tech, fintech, compliance tech or domains where precision and professional accountability shape design decisions
• Experience building or evolving a design system that improved team velocity at scale
