Engineering Manager, Data & Analytics

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization seeking an Engineering Manager for their Data & Analytics team in Berlin. This is a player-coach role leading a team of 4-5 engineers while remaining technically hands-on.

In this position, you will:

• Lead and develop a team of 4-5 data engineers, providing coaching, removing delivery blockers, and building a product-minded engineering culture
• Own roadmap sequencing and priority negotiations with product stakeholders, pushing back where needed and finding constructive compromises
• Balance platform and product demands as the team operates across both data platform maintenance and product delivery simultaneously
• Guide the team through an active transition involving data streaming technologies
• Raise the bar on data modeling practices across the team
• Drive cultural and technical shifts toward distributed data ownership, enabling product teams to progressively own their own data
• Collaborate with the broader staff engineering community on cross-cutting architectural decisions
• Build foundations for AI data governance, including guardrails, access control, and safety for AI agents interacting with data

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Proven experience at Staff Engineer level or equivalent in a data engineering context
• Genuine player-coach mindset—someone who has been deep in technical work and now wants to lead people
• Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to negotiate confidently and reach workable compromises
• Solid data modeling skills with the credibility to make it a team-wide standard
• Experience managing or developing engineers, coaching technical fundamentals and growing product thinking
• Strong communication skills and ability to drive cultural change toward distributed, self-service data ownership
• Comfort operating across both platform and product delivery contexts

Nice to have:

• Experience with data governance for AI agents—guardrails, access control, and safety considerations for agentic analytics
• Familiarity with data lakes, semantic layers, and orchestration tooling at scale
• Experience in a product-led B2B SaaS environment
• Hands-on streaming experience with technologies like Kafka or Flink
