Director of Engineering, Frontend technologies, Marketplace Technologies

About This Opportunity

We are representing a leading European marketplace technology company in their search for a Director of Engineering, Frontend Technologies. Based in Berlin, this role offers the chance to lead transformational change across a mature, multi-platform engineering organization serving millions of users across 20+ markets.

Our client operates at significant scale with 40+ product teams and is at a pivotal moment: their frontend architecture has served them well for six years, but they recognize the need for fundamental evolution. This role exists to define what that future looks like and to lead the technical and organizational change required to get there.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Reimagine and implement the frontend setup for a multi-domain marketplace organization with 40+ teams, each staffed with iOS, Android, and Web engineers
• Define and drive the technology strategy for frontend platforms, establishing modular, scalable architecture that enables rapid development
• Shape the identity of the Frontend Technologies domain, integrating Design Systems and engineering to treat frontend platforms as a cohesive product
• Influence 9 product domain leaders to prioritize and fund platform-wide initiatives without formal authority

Technical Oversight

• Lead a horizontal, platform-focused domain encompassing Android, iOS, Web, and Design System teams
• Oversee strategic technical initiatives including frontend modularization, modernization (SwiftUI/Jetpack Compose), and native automated testing
• Drive integration of design systems and accessibility standards to elevate global UI quality across all platforms
• Ensure resilience and reliability through robust release processes, quality standards, and performance monitoring
• Explore AI-efficiency enablement and cross-platform development opportunities to increase engineering velocity

Team Leadership

• Lead 4 Engineering Managers and 3 Staff Engineers, consolidating their technical expertise into coherent strategy and organizational change
• Balance foundational capabilities (Design Systems, CI/CD, Modularization, App Releases, Performance) to optimize developer velocity and user satisfaction
• Champion the frontend technical vision across peer directors and product leadership

What We're Looking For

Leadership Experience

• At least 2 years leading other engineering leaders (managers and/or staff+ engineers)
• 5+ years of experience influencing cross-functional stakeholders and peer leaders without formal authority
• Track record of driving level-change (not incremental improvement) in large engineering organizations
• Ability to hold dual time horizons: articulating a compelling 2-year vision while defining concrete quarterly deliverables that enable that vision

Technical Acumen

• Sufficient frontend platform expertise to have in-depth conversations with senior technical staff about iOS, Android, and Web architecture
• Ability to understand engineering problems at their essence, consolidate multiple technical perspectives, and make objective decisions
• Experience with design systems, frontend tooling, CI/CD, and modern frontend frameworks
• Understanding of platform-specific trade-offs and cross-platform development approaches

Strategic Capabilities

• Experience translating technical judgment from senior engineers into direction, alignment, and organizational change
• Proven ability to influence roadmaps across multiple product domains to accommodate platform priorities
• Skill in balancing immediate team needs with long-term architectural evolution
• Comfort operating in a matrixed environment where success requires coalition-building

What This Role Is Not

This is not a hands-on technical role. You will not be tuning CI pipelines, owning release trains, or reviewing architecture decisions yourself. Your strongest work should be in changing how dozens of teams operate, not in the technical mechanics themselves.

Location and Work Arrangement

This position is based in Berlin with a hybrid work model. Two days per week in the office are recommended but not strictly enforced, with flexibility for you and your team to determine the optimal collaboration schedule.
