Engineering Lead

We are representing a fast-growing insurtech client in London who is looking for an Engineering Lead to drive technical delivery and team excellence within their Acquisition function. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll own delivery, shape technical direction, and raise engineering standards across the team—all while shipping production code yourself.

Our client combines the resources of an established financial services business with the pace and energy of a product-led technology company. They use AI, real-time data, and modern cloud architecture to deliver meaningful commercial outcomes, and they're looking for someone who reaches for AI by default and uses it to work faster and think bigger.

Responsibilities

• Co-lead the Acquisition team alongside the Product Manager, owning delivery, technical quality, and operational reliability
• Ship high-quality, well-tested TypeScript code to production and set the standard for engineering excellence
• Build and extend serverless systems using AWS services including Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, and CloudWatch
• Integrate with and contribute to RESTful API development exposed via API Gateway
• Work with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CDK to provision and manage cloud resources
• Translate business goals into clear technical scope, success metrics, and delivery plans in partnership with Product and stakeholders
• Coach and mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, and design discussions to raise standards and share ownership of technical direction
• Drive improvements to developer experience, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and release practices that make the team faster and more confident
• Shape how the team uses AI tools and coding agents, balancing speed with quality and keeping human judgement where it matters
• Make pragmatic trade-offs across reliability, performance, and cost in a distributed, event-driven architecture

What We're Looking For

Essential:

• Proven ability to co-lead a team with a PM, taking joint ownership of delivery, quality, and outcomes—not just your own output
• Strong hands-on engineering skills; comfortable shipping production-quality TypeScript and holding the team to high standards
• Significant experience with AWS and modern serverless architecture, or equivalent cloud platforms
• Track record of raising engineering standards as a force-multiplier through code reviews, pairing, and shaping long-term technical direction
• Pragmatic approach to technical decisions, balancing reliability, observability, performance, and cost
• Strong communication skills; able to represent the team upwards and translate business goals into technical delivery plans
• Experience improving developer experience, CI/CD processes, and delivery cadence across a team
• Confident using AI development tools daily, with experience helping a team adopt them without compromising quality

Preferable:

• Experience aligning technical direction beyond your immediate team and working with senior stakeholders
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CDK, with a track record of improving operational resilience
• Practical experience designing event-driven, distributed systems and navigating trade-offs with eventual consistency at scale
• Background in a fast-moving, product-led environment where commercial impact drives decisions
• Track record of creating conditions for engineers to step up, actively giving ownership and space to grow

This role typically follows a hybrid working model with a minimum of three days per week in the client's Central London office, located near Moorgate and Liverpool Street stations.

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and are competitive within the London market for this level of engineering leadership.
