Authorized Special Status Species Field Biologist (CBB, QCB, WSP, SKR) – on call

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential environmental consulting organization seeking an Authorized Special Status Species Field Biologist for immediate on-call employment in the southern California desert regions. This is a field-based, fully remote position requiring availability for extended field assignments while linked to a Southern California office.

Our client specializes in natural resource projects with emphasis on biological surveys and regulatory compliance monitoring. This role focuses primarily on Crotch's Bumble Bee, Quino checkerspot butterfly, western spadefoot, and Stephen's kangaroo rat, with opportunities to support vegetation mapping, wildlife assessments, habitat restoration, and permitting implementation.

Responsibilities

• Lead protocol and pre-construction surveys for Crotch's Bumble Bee and Quino checkerspot butterfly
• Conduct focused western spadefoot surveys and monitoring, including exclusionary fencing, artificial watering, and relocation activities
• Lead Stephen's kangaroo rat trapping surveys and monitoring, including fencing implementation, trapping, and relocation
• Perform general wildlife and botanical surveys, including vegetation and habitat mapping
• Identify and document native and non-native fauna and flora in field conditions
• Conduct avian nesting surveys and mortality monitoring
• Support pre-construction surveys and construction monitoring activities
• Provide environmental compliance monitoring and oversight of restoration crews
• Utilize electronic data collection methods and manage field data
• Work independently and as part of a team in inland and desert environments with rugged terrain
• Ensure assigned tasks remain on schedule and budget
• Communicate compliance concerns to project managers and provide clarification of resource requirements
• Promote safety culture and adherence to safety protocols

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, or related field
• 4+ years of relevant experience conducting surveys for listed species in southern California, particularly Crotch's Bumble Bee, Quino checkerspot butterfly, western spadefoot, and/or Stephen's kangaroo rat
• Valid US Driver's License with clean driving record
• US Citizenship required due to nature of work
• Ability to work in desert and inland environments with rugged terrain

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior consulting experience or equivalent demonstrated expertise
• Experience with biological construction oversight and environmental compliance monitoring
• Experience implementing USFWS biological opinions, Habitat Conservation Plans, CDFW incidental take permits, and CEQA programs
• Previous authorization as biological monitor or designated biologist for target species
• 10(A)(1)(a) permits for Quino checkerspot butterfly or Stephen's kangaroo rat surveys
• Substantial field experience with western spadefoot (all life stages) and Crotch's bumble bee
• Knowledge of southern California wildlife and plant species
• CDFW Scientific Collecting Permit or Memorandum of Understanding for listed species
• Experience with electronic data collection platforms (Fulcrum, Field Maps, etc.)
• Ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles over difficult terrain
• Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
• Familiarity with ESA, CESA, NEPA, CEQA, and Clean Water Act requirements
• Experience on utility or transmission projects preferred
