Data Governance and Platform Manager

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential client in the on-demand services sector seeking their first dedicated Data Governance and Platform Manager. This is a rare opportunity to build governance foundations from the ground up at a company with mature data infrastructure but an honest gap: data quality, tracking standards, and platform hygiene have been handled as side work by analysts. You'll be the first person who wakes up every day thinking about whether the data can be trusted.

Our client operates a centralized Redshift data warehouse with dbt modeling and Airflow orchestration, with Segment feeding event data. The infrastructure exists—your job is to make it trustworthy and keep it that way. You'll also guide their active migration to Lightdash as their single BI platform, setting up permissions, structure, and norms before bad habits form.

Responsibilities

Data Quality and Freshness

• Build automated monitoring across source data, pipelines, and reports
• Catch upstream schema and source changes before they break downstream dependencies
• Run incidents to resolution when issues occur

Data Lineage and Impact Analysis

• Create and maintain a living map from production source to warehouse model to dashboard
• Establish processes so proposed production changes include downstream impact assessments before shipping
• Work toward data contracts with engineering to catch breaking changes in their workflow

Lightdash Platform Administration

• Own workspace structure, permissions, and rollout strategy
• Balance self-serve autonomy with workspace organization and data trust
• Provide enablement so users follow standards they've been taught
• Keep queries fast and warehouse costs under control

Semantic Layer Governance

• Extend their newly-shipped semantic layer to cover remaining critical metrics
• Guard against uncontrolled growth—maintain one governed definition per metric
• Ensure "two dashboards, two numbers" scenarios become impossible

Event Tracking Governance

• Review new Segment events against governance standards
• Keep the event catalog matched to what production actually sends
• Evolve guardrails including naming conventions, property dictionaries, and drift detection

AI Data Readiness

• Govern what data AI agents can access through internal tooling
• Keep the warehouse AI-legible: documented, consistent, and safe for automated querying

Data Security and Privacy

• Manage access controls and PII handling under US state privacy laws
• Conduct periodic reviews of data access for both humans and AI tools

What We're Looking For

Core Attributes

• Governance is your craft, not your chore—you genuinely enjoy making data systems trustworthy and tidy
• AI-native approach: you use AI tools (Claude Code, Copilot, ChatGPT) daily to build quality checks, write automation, and document as you go
• Hands-on senior operator who writes SQL, debugs Airflow DAGs, and configures permissions directly
• Automation-first mindset—your instinct for recurring checks is to build monitors, not checklists
• Strong enforcement skills balanced with collaboration—you hold others to standards gracefully without creating friction

Technical Experience

• Hands-on depth with warehouse and pipeline layers (Redshift, dbt, Airflow or similar)
• Credible experience maintaining BI tools and tracking plans at company scale
• Experience with event tracking platforms like Segment
• Familiarity with BI platforms (Lightdash, Tableau, Metabase, or comparable tools)

What This Role Is NOT

• Not a people-management role initially—you'll work solo at first, though a team may grow if scope demands it
• Not a policy or committee job—when something's broken, you fix it with code, configuration, or conversation
• Not a BI analyst role building dashboards for stakeholders—you build the platform and guardrails
• Not a finished system to maintain—much of this infrastructure doesn't exist yet

First-Year Success Metrics

• Zero pipeline incidents from unannounced source-data changes
• Zero freshness incidents
• All business areas manage on official, well-maintained metrics and dashboards
• Every event has an owner and meets standards
• Governance runs as a documented system that would survive you taking a month off

Pay

Pay via Get A Job.ai: $75,000–$120,000 per year, depending on experience. Our client also offers flexible PTO focused on results rather than tracking hours.
