About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential European defence technology client seeking a Battery System Engineer/Architect to join their team in Munich. Our client develops advanced unmanned aerial platforms where every gram and watt is critical to mission success. This role offers the opportunity to design cutting-edge battery systems that directly impact operational capability in demanding environments.
Responsibilities
- Lead the architectural design of custom battery packs optimized for high-discharge UAV applications with strict weight constraints
- Define requirements for Battery Management Systems (BMS) including state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH) algorithms, cell balancing, and fault protection logic
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers to design lightweight enclosures and thermal mitigation strategies for peak flight loads
- Develop and execute rigorous test plans at cell, module, and pack levels including thermal runaway, drop, vibration, and environmental testing
- Ensure battery designs meet international safety and transport standards (e.g., UN 38.3)
- Partner with supply chain and contract manufacturers to transition designs from prototype to mass production while maintaining quality control
- Work cross-functionally with firmware, electronics, and aerospace engineering teams to integrate battery systems seamlessly
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
- 3+ years of professional experience in battery system design, preferably in aerospace, automotive (EV), or consumer electronics
- Deep understanding of lithium-based battery chemistries, failure modes, and degradation mechanisms
- Experience with BMS architecture, cell monitoring, and protection circuitry
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., CATIA) and PCB design/review tools (e.g., Altium)
- Familiarity with communication protocols such as CAN, I2C, and UART
- Hands-on experience building prototypes, soldering, and using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, electronic loads, battery cyclers)
- Strong focus on optimizing Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) while ensuring safety and thermal stability
Preferred qualifications:
- Direct experience designing battery systems for drones, eVTOLs, or other electric aircraft
- Familiarity with writing test scripts using Python or MATLAB for data analysis
