Academic Tutor

City Year is hiring an Academic Tutor in Johnston, Providence County to make a direct impact on students' learning and personal development in our partner schools. This full-time position offers the opportunity to work with young people who need targeted academic support and mentorship to thrive in the classroom and beyond.

About the Role

As an Academic Tutor at City Year, you will provide personalized instruction to students in core academic subjects while fostering their social-emotional growth. Working directly with classroom teachers, you'll identify student needs, design tailored tutoring sessions, and monitor progress toward measurable learning goals. Your role bridges classroom instruction and individual student needs, ensuring every learner receives the support necessary to succeed academically and build confidence in their abilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver small-group and one-on-one tutoring sessions focused on literacy, numeracy, and other core academic areas
• Assess student learning gaps and develop targeted intervention strategies aligned with classroom curriculum
• Track and document student progress through regular observation, assessment, and data collection
• Communicate with classroom teachers to ensure tutoring complements and reinforces instructional objectives
• Model positive behaviors and serve as a consistent, supportive mentor to students
• Build student confidence and motivation through encouragement and recognition of effort and achievement

Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience working with K-12 students
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly with children and families
• Ability to deliver clear, patient instruction and adapt teaching methods to diverse learner needs
• Experience or demonstrated commitment to supporting underserved student populations
• Reliability and strong work ethic in a structured school environment
• Willingness to collaborate with teachers, staff, and families toward shared student success
