What This Role Involves

Core Duties

  • Assign and sequence ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diverse patient types including ancillary, diagnostic, hospital, clinic, physician pro fee hospitalist, and evaluation and management cases
  • Review facility records and validate APC assignments to confirm they accurately match diagnoses and procedures documented in clinical charts
  • Perform documentation assessment and clinical data abstraction to verify completeness and regulatory compliance of patient records
  • Ensure coding meets 95% quality thresholds while maintaining organization-specific production standards
  • Serve as a resource to client staff on coding practices, data integrity, and compliance questions
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements
  • Participate in training, staff meetings, and continuing education to stay current with coding guidelines and regulations

Qualifications

  • Active credential from AHIMA (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCA) or AAPC (COC, CCS-P, or CPC) or related specialty credential
  • Minimum two years of recent, hands-on coding experience in a production environment
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology
  • Proficiency with ICD-10 and CPT/HCPCS code sets and current coding guidelines
  • Competency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel data entry and filtering
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving abilities when working with diverse internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to pass pre-employment skills assessment
