About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential fusion energy organization based in Munich. They are building next-generation plasma confinement systems and require an experienced laser diagnostician to lead critical measurement infrastructure on a major experimental platform. This is a rare opportunity to work on cutting-edge fusion technology while contributing directly to the development of commercial clean energy solutions.

You will own the full product lifecycle of laser-aided plasma diagnostics—from initial design through installation, calibration, and ongoing operation. This role places you at the intersection of advanced optics, high-energy laser systems, and experimental physics, working alongside a multidisciplinary team of diagnostics experts, software engineers, and fusion scientists.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, build, and deployment of Thomson Scattering diagnostics to measure spatial profiles of electron density and temperature on an experimental stellarator platform
  • Design and implement a plasma density diagnostic system using laser-based two-colour or dispersion interferometry to measure line-integrated electron density
  • Develop detailed diagnostic specifications that meet required measurement performance standards
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to establish robust implementation of laser-based diagnostic systems
  • Prepare and execute comprehensive plans covering design, procurement, build, test, installation, commissioning, calibration, operation, and maintenance phases
  • Oversee work packages, delegating or subcontracting tasks as needed to ensure successful diagnostic deployment
  • Manage the complete diagnostic lifecycle from conception through operational maintenance

What We're Looking For

  • Master's degree or higher in physics, engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Proven experience working with Class IV lasers, including high-energy (Joule-level) pulsed lasers and/or high-power CW infrared single longitudinal mode lasers
  • Previous work on at least one laser-based diagnostic instrument deployed on large infrastructure machines such as accelerators, telescopes, laser facilities, or fusion devices
  • Strong knowledge of geometric optics and light propagation in optical systems
  • Working knowledge of Python software development and modern toolchains (uv, git, etc.)
  • Preferred: Experience designing and building Thomson scattering systems or interferometers for plasma devices
  • Preferred: Experience using optical design software for ray-tracing applications
