About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential autonomous systems company in Munich that is building cutting-edge visual localization technology for unmanned platforms. Our client combines 3D computer vision, state estimation, and AI to enable autonomous systems to navigate reliably when GPS and traditional sensors become unavailable.
As a Staff Computer Vision Engineer focused on localization, you will shape critical algorithm and architecture decisions, implement core system components, and guide other engineers through complex problems spanning sensors, estimation, and onboard compute. This is a hands-on individual contributor role where you'll take ideas from research and recorded data through production code, live sensor testing, and field deployment.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement VIO, SLAM, and sensor fusion algorithms for autonomous systems operating in GPS-degraded or GPS-denied environments, with initial focus on UAV platforms
- Solve robustness challenges caused by low light, rain, fog, motion blur, vibration, and sensor degradation through improved estimation methods, learned approaches, and strategic data use
- Develop mapping, loop closure, relocalization, and map-based navigation capabilities that provide reliable pose, velocity, and uncertainty estimates to the broader autonomy stack
- Address camera and IMU calibration, sensor synchronization, rolling shutter effects, latency, and frame drop issues across algorithms and system integration
- Design and optimize production software for Jetson-class platforms and other constrained CPU/GPU environments, balancing accuracy, robustness, latency, memory, and power
- Build evaluation and replay tools that enable failure reproduction, approach comparison, and regression detection across recorded data and deployed systems
- Provide technical leadership on challenging projects, conduct design and code reviews, and mentor engineers on localization and perception topics
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Direct experience building and deploying VIO, SLAM, localization, or sensor-fusion systems, with ability to explain implementation details, trade-offs considered, failures resolved, and measured outcomes
- Proven track record solving problems that span algorithms, sensors, and runtime constraints, with demonstrated improvements in accuracy, robustness, or computational efficiency
- Strong foundations in 3D geometry, linear algebra, probability, estimation, and optimization, with practical experience in EKFs, factor graphs, nonlinear least squares, and bundle adjustment
- Production C++ development experience on Linux systems and Python proficiency for analysis, evaluation, and tooling
- Hands-on work with cameras and IMUs, including calibration and timing challenges; experience using logs, reproducible experiments, and regression tests to validate improvements
- History of leading substantial technical work and helping other engineers improve their designs and implementations while remaining comfortable writing critical code yourself
- Master's degree, PhD, or equivalent practical experience in a relevant technical field
- Fluent English; German is a plus
- Eligibility to work on defense-related projects and obtain relevant security clearance where required
Valued Additional Skills:
- Experience deploying perception systems on Nvidia Jetson or embedded GPUs, writing CUDA kernels, or optimizing neural networks for edge deployment
- Work with LWIR thermal cameras for navigation, rolling shutter effects, visual-inertial calibration, multi-camera rigs, or fisheye/wide-angle lenses
- GPS-denied UAV navigation, terrain-relative navigation, or map-based localization experience
- Experience building evaluation datasets, replay systems, perception observability tools, or automated regression pipelines
- Rust programming experience
- Publications or open-source contributions in SLAM, VIO, 3D computer vision, state estimation, or robotics
