Team Lead – Visual Localization

Our talent team at Get A Job.ai is representing a confidential autonomous systems organization in Munich. They are building spatial intelligence software for unmanned platforms, combining computer vision, state estimation, and AI to enable reliable navigation when traditional sensors become unreliable.

We are seeking a Team Lead - Visual Localization to build and lead the engineering team responsible for localization technology. You will hire and develop engineers, own the technical roadmap, and deliver systems that work on real sensors in challenging field conditions. This role balances leadership with hands-on technical work—expect to spend 20–40% of your time coding while guiding architecture and solving difficult problems alongside your team.

Responsibilities

• Hire, assess, and develop localization engineers; provide clear feedback and establish ownership across the team
• Own the roadmap and delivery of VIO, SLAM, sensor fusion, calibration, mapping, and relocalization capabilities
• Guide architecture and core algorithm decisions, making explicit tradeoffs between accuracy, robustness, latency, memory, and power
• Build evaluation and replay systems so the team can iterate on recorded data; maintain regression tests and measurable performance criteria
• Stay involved in critical algorithms, production code, and debugging of issues related to timing, calibration, vibration, motion blur, lighting, and sensor degradation
• Coordinate sensor and compute requirements with adjacent robotics, embedded, hardware, and field teams
• Support field deployment, using mission logs and observed failures to inform engineering priorities

What We're Looking For

• Direct experience building VIO or SLAM systems and taking them through deployment; you can explain implementation details, limitations, and measured improvements
• Track record leading engineers through difficult technical work, with examples of systems delivered, people developed, and decisions owned (this may be your first formal management role)
• Ability to assess technical work, give useful feedback, and actively participate in recruiting
• Strong foundations in 3D geometry, estimation, optimization, and sensor fusion
• Proficiency in production C++ and Python for analysis, evaluation, and tooling
• Comfortable working with Linux, real sensors, calibration, synchronization, and constrained onboard compute; Rust experience is a plus
• Experience using replay, evaluation datasets, and automated tests to guide development and assess readiness
• Master's degree, PhD, or equivalent practical experience in a relevant technical field
• Fluent English; German is a plus
• Eligibility to work on defence-related projects and obtain relevant security clearance where required

Especially valued: Experience with embedded deployment (Nvidia Jetson, CUDA, edge neural networks), thermal cameras, visual-inertial calibration, multi-camera rigs, GNSS-denied UAV navigation, terrain-relative localization, evaluation dataset development, or publications/open-source contributions in SLAM, VIO, or robotics.
