Staff Backend Engineer, Platform

The Opportunity

We are representing a fast-growing AI platform company serving mid-market businesses across Europe. As they prepare to onboard multiple enterprise customers weekly, they need a staff-level backend engineer to own and scale their multi-tenant platform infrastructure. This is a high-impact role where your architectural decisions will directly determine how quickly the business can grow.

The challenge is compounding load: more customers, multiple users per customer, many concurrent agent interactions, and hundreds of automated data pipelines being created and executed simultaneously. You'll be building the foundation that makes all of this survivable.

Responsibilities

• Scale a multi-tenant Postgres deployment under unpredictable, high-volume load through query optimization, I/O tuning, read/write separation, and horizontal scaling strategies
• Design and implement resource management for agent-driven workloads where individual users may trigger dozens of simultaneous long-running operations against large data sources
• Manage sandbox infrastructure using Docker containers with strict compute and memory budgets for query execution and file processing
• Build and maintain secure connectivity layer into customer networks, including SOCKS5 over WebSockets, authentication, and routing logic
• Scope architectural decisions and implement them hands-on in production code

What We're Looking For

• Staff or principal engineer who still writes production code daily, not purely advisory
• Proven track record building and scaling multi-tenant data platforms at a B2B startup or platform company
• Deep database expertise, particularly Postgres: query plans, locking models, I/O optimization, caching strategies, replication, and sharding
• Comfortable with startup pace and taking full ownership without detailed specifications
• Pragmatic engineering approach—building solid foundations without over-engineering
• Strong TypeScript proficiency across the stack
• English fluency (C1 level); German is a plus
• Bonus: experience at data platform or warehouse companies (Snowflake, Databricks, Cloudflare, or similar)
• Bonus: networking depth in proxies, VPN, or routing

Tech stack: TypeScript end-to-end, Bun, tRPC, Postgres, Supabase, React (Mantine, TanStack Query), Docker, job/process management, VPN/routing, agentic frameworks

Location: Primarily on-site in Munich. Relocation support available within Europe. Candidates already in London may be considered with expectation of regular Munich travel, as in-person collaboration is central to the team culture.
