About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential robotics organization in München, Bayern, Germany, seeking a Senior Payload Integration Engineer for autonomous ground vehicle platforms. This is a senior individual contributor role with substantial ownership over electrical, electronic, and mechanical payload integration architecture. You will define scalable, reusable interfaces that enable rapid adaptation to evolving mission requirements without vehicle redesign for every new configuration.

You will work at the intersection of vehicle hardware, autonomy software, mechanical engineering, suppliers, and manufacturing—driving integration from interface definition through commissioning until the complete system is field-proven.

Responsibilities

  • Payload Integration Architecture: Define and own the electrical, electronic, and mechanical integration concept for various payloads across UGV platforms. Design scalable, reusable interfaces (power supply, signal routing, communication, connectors, mounting, cooling, grounding, shielding, serviceability) instead of one-off solutions.
  • E/E and Mechanical Integration: Integrate payloads into vehicle power, network, compute, and control architectures—schematics, harnessing, connectors, fusing, diagnostics, interface documentation. Work with vehicle communication buses (CAN, automotive Ethernet). Own systematic cross-domain troubleshooting across payload, harness, power, compute, and software.
  • Payload Mounting: Drive mounting design with internal vehicle teams and external suppliers—brackets, packaging, accessibility, vibration robustness, environmental protection, maintainability, manufacturability.
  • Bring-up and Commissioning: Plan and execute payload bring-up on vehicle prototypes: mechanical fitment, electrical integration, software provisioning (flashing, configuration, diagnostics), troubleshooting, and validation to full system commissioning. Define acceptance criteria, build system-level test setups, automate integration and regression tests.
  • Supplier Coordination: Work directly with payload suppliers to clarify requirements, review technical documentation, align interface specifications, and drive issue resolution.
  • Documentation and Collaboration: Create interface control documents, integration guides, test reports, lessons learned, and reusable standards. Support build-ups, rework, payload installation, and commissioning in the workshop during prototype and customer-specific phases.

What We're Looking For

  • Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, vehicle systems, or comparable technical field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in field robotics, vehicle, or mechatronic system integration—you have brought complex E/E systems to life on real vehicles or machines.
  • Strong E/E integration expertise: power distribution, signal interfaces, connectors, wiring harnesses, grounding, shielding, diagnostics, vehicle-level troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience with vehicle communication buses (CAN, ideally CAN-FD or automotive Ethernet), including reading and debugging bus traffic during integration.
  • Solid mechanical integration understanding: mounting concepts, packaging, tolerances, vibration, environmental robustness, accessibility, serviceability.
  • Practical software skills for integration work: Linux, scripting (Python or Bash), software provisioning and configuration of embedded devices, issue tracking tools. Comfortable automating recurring integration tests.
  • Experience defining and running validation setups from bench and rig level to vehicle-level testing, with a quality-first mindset and discipline for reliable, repeatable test setups.
  • Strong integration mindset: systematic debugging, structured documentation, able to turn unclear payload requirements into practical engineering solutions.
  • Hands-on mentality: comfortable working directly on vehicles, prototypes, harnesses, brackets, and payload installations in the workshop.
  • Strong communication skills across engineering teams, suppliers, procurement, and program stakeholders.
  • Fluent in German and English.
  • High ownership, pragmatic, thriving in a fast-paced environment.
