About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential travel technology company based in London that is rebuilding critical infrastructure for the global travel industry. This Senior Engineer role offers the chance to work on API systems processing millions of bookings while shaping both product direction and engineering culture.
Our client is a well-funded scale-up backed by top-tier investors, working to modernize how travel providers connect with customers through elegant, developer-focused tooling.
Responsibilities
- Design and ship API features that serve millions of travel bookings at scale
- Take ambiguous, loosely-defined problems and convert them into clear technical plans and implementations
- Make architectural decisions across the stack, considering system-wide implications and trade-offs
- Write production code hands-on as a core part of the role, not as a occasional activity
- Work with integrations across multiple third-party travel providers with varying systems and requirements
- Mentor engineers and help elevate team standards through code review, pairing, and technical guidance
- Communicate technical decisions, trade-offs, and progress clearly to both internal teams and external stakeholders
- Balance technical rigour with business impact when prioritizing and delivering solutions
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience designing and shipping APIs at scale with a strong point of view on developer experience
- Ability to work independently on complex, ambiguous problems and drive them to completion
- Systems thinking: understanding how decisions cascade across different parts of the technical stack
- Passion for remaining hands-on with production code as a senior engineer for the long term
- Experience mentoring or coaching other engineers and raising the bar for team quality
- Clear, structured communication skills for articulating technical reasoning and trade-offs to diverse audiences
- Collaborative mindset: confidence in your approach balanced with openness to feedback and knowing when to compromise
- Strong engineering fundamentals (specific technology experience is secondary to problem-solving ability)
- Bonus: Prior experience in travel, flights, hotels, or automotive booking systems
Technical environment: The client works with Elixir, Phoenix, Kubernetes, and Google Cloud Platform, though they prioritize strong engineering fundamentals over specific framework experience.
Location: London (Hybrid, Shoreditch/Liverpool Street area)
Employment type: Full-time
