About This Opportunity

We are representing a growing, family-led technology organization in Freiburg that specializes in industrial imaging and automation solutions. Their systems are deployed in over 15,000 machines worldwide, and they're building a modern IT infrastructure rooted in Linux and open source principles.

As a Linux System Administrator, you'll join a deliberately lean IT team with significant creative freedom. Instead of rigid corporate structures, you'll experience short decision chains, direct communication with leadership, and the ability to actively shape technical direction. The technology focus is consistently on Linux and open source, with exciting projects ahead including migrations to open source alternatives, expanding cyber security and resilience capabilities, and continuously developing an internal Linux-based AI server.

This hybrid role is based in Freiburg with typically one day per week remote work, with potential for additional flexibility by arrangement.

Responsibilities

• Manage and optimize the Linux system landscape and associated network and IT infrastructure
• Drive development of existing systems and support migrations from standard software to suitable open source alternatives
• Work with virtualization and automation technologies including Proxmox, Docker, vSphere, Python, and Ansible
• Advance security and resilience capabilities, addressing technical requirements around NIS 2, GDPR, CRA, and TISAX
• Maintain and expand the company's Linux-based AI server infrastructure to support secure internal use of artificial intelligence
• Resolve complex internal IT issues for primarily technically proficient users, focusing on second and third-level support
• Actively participate in technical decision-making and collaborate with leadership on IT strategy

What We're Looking For

• Completed apprenticeship as IT specialist, IT system administrator, degree in computer science, or comparable qualification
• Minimum two years of professional experience with clear focus on Linux administration following completion of training or studies
• Very strong Linux knowledge—you already work routinely with Linux and don't need to learn the operating system from scratch
• Solid understanding of network technology, network protocols, and IT infrastructure
• Experience with virtualization or container technologies such as Proxmox, Docker, or vSphere
• Knowledge of automation using Python, Ansible, or comparable technologies
• Enthusiasm for open source and interest in building an IT landscape on open and secure solutions long-term
• Fluent German at minimum C1 level and fluent English
• Independent, pragmatic working style with desire to actively shape technical decisions and try new solutions collaboratively
• Knowledge of Nextcloud, Open Xchange, Nginx, pfSense, OpenVPN, Git, or Ceph, as well as IT security experience, are advantageous

Pay

The client offers a base salary starting at €60,000 gross annually with willingness to significantly exceed this based on qualifications and experience, plus a success-based annual bonus that has reached several thousand euros in strong years.
