About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential financial technology organization in their search for a German Tax Specialist based in Berlin. Our client operates at the intersection of investment infrastructure and regulatory compliance, requiring deep expertise in German capital markets taxation.
This is a high-impact role where you'll serve as the bridge between tax regulation, product development, and technical implementation. You'll own critical processes that ensure compliant, automated tax treatment for investment products under German law.
Responsibilities
- Investment Tax Operations: Manage daily KEST (capital gains tax) activities, run controls, resolve incidents, and support product teams. Execute the annual Vorabpauschale (advance lump-sum tax) calculation lifecycle under the German Investment Tax Act (InvStG).
- Digital Dividend & Regulatory Reporting: Support technical implementation and operational governance of MiKaDiv (dividend tax reporting). Lead data gathering across the custody chain, validate beneficial ownership timelines, and manage electronic transmission paths to obtain unique tax reference numbers (UUIDs) from BZSt. Oversee NEK (non-withheld capital gains tax) reporting workflows and exception handling.
- Customer Tax Exemptions: Support FSAk (exemption order control procedures) submissions and controls. Validate and audit NV-Bescheinigungen (Non-Assessment Certificates), ensuring proper application rules. Oversee automated loss pot management (Verlusttöpfe), including Share Loss Pot and General Loss Pot logic, cross-pot optimization, and loss pot transfers during account migrations or closures.
- Complex Tax Scenarios: Design and implement technical logic for backward tax corrections in deceased account scenarios (Erbfall), including retro-active dissolution of exemption orders and automated cross-year loss pot recalculations. Control church tax query processes (KiStAM) to BZSt, ensuring correct split-tax formulas for joint accounts with mixed religious denominations.
- Tax Documentation & Systems: Support flawless generation of Jahressteuerbescheinigung (annual German tax certificates), including complex edge cases for joint accounts. Act as primary business analyst for product and engineering teams, translating German tax regulation updates into automated system logic and technical specifications.
What We're Looking For
- Deep German Tax Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of the German Investment Tax Act (InvStG), KEST processes, Vorabpauschale, loss pot mechanics, and dividend taxation frameworks.
- Regulatory Reporting Knowledge: Familiarity with MiKaDiv, NEK reporting, FSAk control procedures, NV-Bescheinigungen, and BZSt processes including KiStAM queries.
- Technical Aptitude: Ability to translate complex tax rules into technical specifications for product and engineering teams. Experience working with automated tax calculation systems and core banking platforms is highly valuable.
- Analytical & Detail-Oriented: Strong problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to regulatory detail and edge case handling.
- Collaboration Skills: Proven ability to work cross-functionally with product, engineering, and compliance teams to implement tax automation solutions.
- Language: Fluent German (native or near-native) is essential; English proficiency required for internal collaboration.
- Experience: Background in tax operations, financial services compliance, or similar roles within investment platforms, banks, or fintech organizations.
