Senior Systems Engineer – Commissioning and Characterisation

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential AI computing organization seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join their Commissioning and Characterisation team. This role offers the opportunity to investigate how next-generation computing architectures behave at scale, from rack to data centre deployments.

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will design experiments, benchmark AI workloads, and explore how hardware and software components interact under demanding real-world conditions. You will work on problems where answers aren't readily known, turning curiosity into measurable evidence that helps infrastructure engineers, architects, and application specialists understand system behavior, performance, scalability, and reliability.

You do not need to be an AI expert. What matters most is strong technical judgment, curiosity, and a clear preference for evidence over opinion. This role suits engineers who take initiative, question assumptions, and thrive in exploratory environments.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute experiments to characterize novel AI computing architectures under production workloads
• Benchmark representative AI workloads and analyze system behavior at scale
• Investigate unexpected system behavior and develop new measurement approaches
• Develop tooling and automation to collect, analyze, and visualize system metrics
• Collaborate with infrastructure engineers, architects, and application teams to share findings
• Report observations accurately and objectively, ensuring reproducibility of results
• Contribute to continuous professional development and team knowledge sharing

What We're Looking For

• Proficiency in Python for writing tests, automating tasks, analyzing data, or developing engineering tools
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
• Curiosity-driven approach to investigating complex systems
• Ability to explain technical findings clearly using accurate, reproducible evidence
• Confidence to work independently, take ownership, and collaborate across teams
• Experience in one or more of the following areas: AI workloads and benchmarking, systems architecture, parallel and distributed computing, automation, containers, or orchestration infrastructure
• Legal right to work in the UK (visa sponsorship not available for this role)
