ESG & Environmental and Social Management Consultant (C-26-14)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential international agricultural research organization that is strengthening its institutional approach to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Environmental and Social Management (ESM). Our client operates with a decentralized model across multiple countries and is building frameworks to identify, assess, manage, and monitor environmental and social risks across their research portfolio, operations, and partnerships.

This remote consultancy focuses on establishing a credible ESG architecture that integrates with existing governance and enterprise risk management systems. The assignment will assess readiness against ISO 14001, Green Climate Fund (GCF) requirements, and donor expectations, then recommend practical steps to close identified gaps.

Responsibilities

As the ESG & Environmental and Social Management Consultant, you will deliver Phase 1 of a multi-phase engagement:

• Conduct a comprehensive current-state assessment of the organization's ESG maturity, ISO 14001 alignment, and GCF environmental and social safeguards readiness
• Develop an integrated gap analysis covering ISO requirements, institutional ESG benchmarks, GCF safeguards, and broader donor expectations
• Draft an organizational ESG and Environmental & Social Management Policy appropriate to a decentralized international research context
• Prepare a requirements crosswalk mapping international standards to existing institutional systems
• Deliver a management briefing with validated findings and recommendations on subsequent phase scope and sequencing
• Complete all deliverables within 25 working days over a 4–6 week period, expected to commence September 2026

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Advanced degree or equivalent professional qualification in environmental management, ESG, sustainability, environmental and social safeguards, climate finance, international development, or related field
• Demonstrated experience conducting ISO 14001 systems assessments and gap analyses
• At least 10 years of substantive experience with environmental and social management systems and safeguards
• Strong knowledge of IFC Performance Standards or comparable multilateral development bank safeguard frameworks
• Familiarity with Green Climate Fund environmental, social and institutional requirements
• Experience with gender considerations, stakeholder engagement, grievance mechanisms and safeguarding requirements in international development contexts
• Proven track record conducting ESG/ESMS institutional maturity assessments and developing policies and roadmaps
• Experience integrating safeguards into project and partner-management processes
• Ability to translate international standards into proportionate, practical operational requirements for decentralized organizations
• Excellent written and spoken English with strong facilitation and senior-management communication skills

Desirable experience:

• International agricultural research organizations, multilateral development banks, climate-finance institutions, or similarly decentralized international entities
