We are representing a confidential fintech platform operating across North America in their search for a Senior Data Engineer to establish data engineering as a core discipline within their organization.
This is a high-ownership, greenfield role where you'll build the data and ML platform infrastructure that transforms models into reliable production services. You'll own the foundation that bridges data science and product teams, working with large volumes of financial data that power decision-making for banks and financial institutions across the continent.
Responsibilities
- Own and evolve the data platform including BigQuery warehouse, dbt transformation layers, Airflow/Cloud Composer orchestration, and Pub/Sub ingestion that feed every model and metric
- Build and operate the ML platform with training pipelines (Kubeflow on Vertex AI), model serving (FastAPI behind Vertex endpoints), CI/CD, containerization, and typed contracts
- Take operational ownership of model-serving infrastructure so reliability isn't carried by data scientists alone
- Harden and standardize data models the business depends on by improving schemas, fixing data-quality issues, and establishing trustworthy source-of-truth feeds
- Establish data governance and observability, bringing data under proper governance and building operational metrics for products
- Standardize data engineering patterns, tooling, and pipelines across product lines for broader team adoption
- Partner with data science, backend, and product teams on producer-to-consumer contracts for models and downstream aggregation
- Design scalable data pipelines that process and transform large volumes of financial data
- Develop cost-efficient, high-performance data services supporting real-time and batch workloads
What We're Looking For
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on Data Engineering experience designing, building, and operating production data platforms, pipelines, and warehouse solutions in cloud environments
- Data Engineering Expertise: Strong experience with ETL/ELT development, data modeling, schema design, orchestration, data quality, lineage, and warehouse optimization; experience with BigQuery, dbt, Airflow or equivalent modern tooling highly desirable
- Technical Foundation: Expert SQL (non-negotiable) and strong Python skills with ability to build scalable, maintainable, well-tested data solutions supporting operational and analytical workloads
- Cloud Data Platforms: Experience with modern cloud-native data ecosystems including data warehouses, event-driven architectures, distributed processing, and platform observability
- Operational Excellence: Demonstrated ownership of production systems including monitoring, reliability, performance tuning, cost optimization, incident response, and ongoing improvements
- Machine Learning Platform Exposure: Experience supporting ML workflows, feature pipelines, model-serving infrastructure, or MLOps environments is an asset
- Collaboration: Ability to partner effectively with Data Science, Product, Engineering, and QA teams to deliver trusted, scalable, well-governed data solutions
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in Canada
Tech Stack: Python, SQL, Bash, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), BigQuery, dbt, Airflow (Cloud Composer), Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions, Kubeflow, Vertex AI, MLflow, FastAPI, Docker, Terraform, Protocol Buffers, Azure DevOps, Grafana, GCP Logging. You don't need experience with every tool—strong fundamentals matter most.
Location: Canada, remote work environment with occasional in-person gatherings
