MAVLink & Autopilot Engineer

About the Role

We are representing a confidential defense technology organization in their search for a MAVLink & Autopilot Engineer based in Paris. Our client develops advanced counter-drone systems and unmanned platforms for NATO-aligned defense institutions.

In this role, you will own the autopilot and communication architecture for both fixed-wing and multi-rotor unmanned aircraft systems. You will design and harden MAVLink integration layers, customize ArduPlane and ArduCopter firmware, and validate your work through live flight testing. This is a hands-on position where you will move fluidly between software development and field operations.

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain MAVLink-based communication pipelines between onboard systems, ground control stations, and supporting infrastructure
• Develop custom MAVLink messages, dialects, and protocol extensions tailored to operational defense requirements
• Build MAVLink parsers, routers, and middleware in C++ and Python
• Customize ArduPlane and ArduCopter firmware: flight modes, mission logic, failsafe behaviors, and navigation patterns
• Integrate external sensors, AI inference modules, and payloads into the ArduPilot ecosystem
• Maintain a documented fork of ArduPilot with client-specific modifications
• Conduct hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing before live flight validation
• Collaborate with guidance, navigation, and control engineers to integrate autonomous behaviors
• Develop companion computer interfaces (Raspberry Pi, Jetson) communicating with autopilots via MAVLink
• Lead ground testing, bench testing, and live flight campaigns
• Debug in-flight anomalies using DataFlash and telemetry logs
• Support operational deployments and live demonstrations in field environments
• Maintain technical documentation including architecture diagrams, interface specs, and test reports

What We're Looking For

Experience:

• 4–5 years in embedded systems, UAS development, or robotics with focus on autopilot systems and MAVLink
• Hands-on experience with ArduPlane and/or ArduCopter on real airframes, not just simulation
• Deep expertise in MAVLink protocol: message design, dialect customization, routing, and integration
• Proven track record integrating companion computers with flight controllers in operational UAS
• Experience with both fixed-wing and multi-rotor platforms required
• Prior work in defense, dual-use, or operational UAS environments strongly preferred

Technical Skills (must have hands-on proficiency):

• C++ and Python development in embedded and companion computer contexts
• ArduPilot firmware customization: flight modes, failsafes, mission logic, parameter tuning
• MAVLink protocol: custom dialects, message routing, parser development
• HIL/SIL testing with ArduPilot SITL and simulators (Gazebo, JSBSim, RealFlight)
• Flight log analysis: DataFlash logs, MAVLink telemetry, post-flight debugging
• Companion computer integration via serial/UART, USB, and network-based MAVLink links
• Git-based development workflows in collaborative engineering environments
