About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential e-mobility organization seeking an Engineering Manager for Embedded Systems in Munich, Bavaria. This is a rare opportunity to lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for the complete lifecycle of AC charging hardware—from circuit design and firmware development through certification, manufacturing, and fleet management.

This is not a pure software management role. You will lead a team of 6-8 engineers spanning embedded software, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Your scope includes firmware release management for thousands of deployed units, EMC certification workflows, regulatory compliance (Eichrecht, CE, VDE), contract manufacturer relationships, and production line support.

The technology stack includes embedded Linux (Yocto), open source EV charging frameworks, and development in Rust, Python, C, and C++. You won't be the deepest specialist in any one domain—your tech leads handle that—but you must be technical enough to represent the team confidently, challenge estimates, and navigate trade-offs between firmware, hardware, and regulatory constraints.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a team of 6-8 engineers across embedded software, electrical, and mechanical disciplines: conduct 1:1s, performance reviews, compensation planning, hiring, and structured performance management when necessary
  • Own delivery: quarterly planning and OKRs with leadership, translating business requirements into scoped engineering work, and providing rationale when pushback is needed
  • Manage the firmware release train (dev, canary, production) for the charger fleet and be accountable for fleet-impacting incidents alongside operations teams
  • Drive certification and compliance as a continuous workstream: Eichrecht (Modul B and D), CE, EMC campaigns, VDE and TÜV interactions, DSO assessments, and emerging requirements like vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and AFIR changes
  • Manage key vendors and partners across the full bill of materials: EVCC board suppliers, meter vendors, payment terminal providers, contract manufacturers, and open source partners
  • Keep production shippable: end-of-line testing, BOM changes, cost analysis, supply chain risk mitigation, and same-day escalation support for factory line issues
  • Build a resilient team structure: develop tech leads, remove yourself from the critical path of individual contributor work, and reduce bus factor on certification and hardware knowledge

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Several years of experience managing embedded, firmware, or hardware-adjacent engineering teams, including hiring, performance reviews, and difficult personnel conversations
  • Solid engineering background in embedded systems with a track record of shipping firmware or devices to production; able to hold technical arguments with strong, opinionated senior engineers
  • Comfort with the physical product side: electronics, EMC, test labs, manufacturing (you don't need to design circuits, but this world should not be foreign to you)
  • Demonstrated experience working with certification bodies, notified bodies, or regulated products—or the rigor and appetite to own this quickly
  • Outstanding self-organization: this role juggles many parallel threads (people, releases, audits, vendors, factory); reliable follow-through is the single most important skill
  • Track record of building self-managing teams: delegating effectively, developing tech leads, and staying off the critical path rather than being the hero
  • Excellent communication skills in English, from firmware engineers to executives to external auditors

Preferred:

  • German language skills—significant supplier, certification, and authority communication runs in German
  • Experience in EV charging or e-mobility: OCPP, ISO 15118, Eichrecht, smart charging
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux (Yocto), open source EV charging stacks, Rust, or modern C++
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and owning production or end-of-line testing
  • Experience managing multi-generation products (legacy fleet plus new platform in parallel)

Application Note: Please describe a physical product you helped ship—what your team built, what went wrong on the way to production, and what your part in fixing it was.
