Ubuntu Core Software Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential open-source technology organization seeking an Ubuntu Core Software Engineer to work remotely in the EMEA region. Our client is redefining the Linux experience in embedded environments, delivering secure and updatable operating systems for IoT, automotive, and aviation applications.

This is a rare opportunity for a software engineer passionate about low-level systems, kernel development, and device firmware to work on next-generation secure embedded Linux solutions. You'll design and implement software running on ARM, RISC-V, and X86 architectures, working across boot mechanisms, bootloaders, storage layouts, device trees, and kernel services.

Responsibilities

• Write high-quality C or Golang code with comprehensive unit tests to create new embedded Linux features
• Debug complex Linux system-level issues and deliver robust fixes
• Integrate diverse bootloaders and maintain gadget snaps for various hardware platforms
• Collaborate proactively with a distributed engineering team across multiple time zones
• Review code produced by other engineers and provide constructive technical feedback
• Discuss architectural ideas and collaborate on finding elegant solutions to low-level systems challenges
• Travel 2-4 times per year for team sprints and technical events

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or related field
• Strong experience with C or Golang, plus shell scripting
• Solid understanding of Linux internals and modern GNU/Linux distributions (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
• Personal or professional experience with Linux-capable embedded devices (such as Raspberry Pi)
• Passionate about open-source software and the developer experience
• Curious, flexible, articulate, and accountable working style
• Strong soft skills with enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated approach

Highly valued experience in one or more of:

• Bootloaders on ARM and X86 architectures (piboot, uboot, grub-uefi)
• Systemd and units, udev, initrd, graphics subsystems
• OS-level firmware daemons and CLI applications
• Linux security implementations: TPM, FDE, LUKS, HSM
• Yocto build system
