Staff Systems Engineer – IT & Infrastructure (d/f/m)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech client in Berlin who is seeking an experienced Staff Systems Engineer to join their IT & Infrastructure team on an interim freelance basis. This is a critical technical role responsible for maintaining and evolving the enterprise systems that power a fast-growing organization serving millions of users across multiple markets.

In this position, you'll architect and operate the cloud infrastructure, identity management, and core systems that enable every team to work effectively. You'll be the technical expert ensuring high availability, security, and intelligent automation across the enterprise technology landscape.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and operate enterprise cloud infrastructure, ensuring high availability, performance, and security across all systems
• Lead identity management evolution, including platform management and Okta, developing scalable governance for human and agentic identities
• Support integration of new tools and systems, owning technical evaluation, onboarding, and configuration end-to-end
• Ensure enterprise systems remain current with security configurations, patches, and compliance standards consistently applied
• Maintain security backups and redundancies, proactively identifying and closing infrastructure gaps
• Manage and improve network and device management systems for a modern, hybrid workforce
• Develop automations, AI-powered solutions, and scripts to reduce manual work and improve efficiency
• Provide third-level support for cloud applications as the deepest technical escalation point
• Collaborate with SRE and platform engineering teams to assess risk, develop guardrails, and resolve incidents
• Own performance tuning of application stacks, including messaging, load management, and components such as Apache and Ruby
• Contribute strategic thinking alongside hands-on execution to continuously improve enterprise architecture

What We're Looking For

• Strong hands-on experience in enterprise cloud administration, ideally with GCP
• Solid practical experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and virtualization technologies (Docker, VMware)
• Deep networking knowledge with TCP/IP and related protocols; ability to diagnose and resolve complex network issues
• Proven ability to implement network security and governance best practices
• Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (Python or shell preferred)
• Hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting Google Workspace and Linux environments
• Experience setting up and improving monitoring and visualization systems for observability
• Background in engineering or computer science is a plus; structured thinking and hands-on experience are essential
• This is a freelance interim position based in Berlin
