Staff Software Engineer, Dev Environments

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential global technology organization seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own the developer environment experience for thousands of engineers across multiple platforms and geographies. In this role, you will:

• Define the architecture for how engineers develop and ship code across local and remote dev containers, remote IDE/VM lifecycle, and the full local-to-remote development loop
• Build monorepo dev tooling at significant scale, setting standards for consolidated backend infrastructure
• Provision production-shaped environments in seconds, maintaining state synchronization over the network while keeping remote machines feeling local, reliably and cost-effectively
• Design systems that treat AI agents as first-class consumers, creating sandboxes that spin up on demand, run in parallel, and safely handle real repositories
• Support agent workflows launched from IDEs, CLIs, or messaging platforms with no laptop required to review and ship changes
• Align cross-functional teams (Security, Infrastructure, Product Engineering) around complex, ambiguous problems with no existing playbook
• Mentor engineers at all levels through design reviews, code review, pairing, and architectural guidance
• Help set hiring standards by leading interview loops and supporting onboarding of senior hires

What We're Looking For

Essential qualifications:

• Proven track record shipping production systems and leading cross-team initiatives with group-level impact, comfortable owning delivery end-to-end from design through production and adoption
• Hands-on fluency with languages and tooling used to build developer tooling (Go, Python, TypeScript) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform)
• Experience managing compute via Kubernetes (multi-tenant workload isolation, autoscaling ephemeral workloads, cost management) or lightweight VM/sandbox technology (e.g., Firecracker)
• Working knowledge of cloud networking, including securely and cost-effectively routing traffic across network boundaries (VPNs, service meshes)
• Experience integrating LLM/AI tooling into developer workflows both locally and remotely
• Excellent written and verbal communication; able to influence senior stakeholders and align multiple teams without formal authority
• Experience building close working relationships with engineering teams who consume your platform

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience in developer platforms or adjacent infrastructure: devcontainers, remote development, remote IDE backends, or developer workstation tooling
• Practical experience with remote IDE backend flows or cloud development environment products
• Experience with remote build/execution systems or large-scale build caching
