Software Engineer – Secure Container Images

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential open-source technology organization that maintains one of the most widely used container image portfolios in the industry. Our talent team is seeking a Software Engineer to join their team building and securing next-generation container images that developers worldwide rely on for production workloads.

In this role, you will own the entire lifecycle of container images—from upstream source to published artifact. You'll build the automation pipelines that package, test, scan, sign, and publish hardened container images at scale. This is hands-on engineering work across multiple technologies, programming languages, and hundreds of open source projects.

This position is remote within the EMEA region, with occasional international travel (2-4 times yearly) for team events.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain a portfolio of production-ready, security-hardened container images
• Design and operate automated CI/CD pipelines for building, testing, scanning, signing, and publishing images across multiple architectures
• Develop tooling and tests to validate security compliance and cloud-native compatibility
• Collaborate with open source communities and partners to integrate new features, patches, and applications
• Work cross-functionally with product security, platform, infrastructure, and customer-facing teams
• Define and enforce image quality standards spanning security, performance, size, and developer experience
• Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing
• Mentor junior engineers and participate in hiring processes
• Participate in agile workflows within a globally distributed team

What We're Looking For

Required Skills & Experience:

• Proficiency in Bash and Python
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins
• Proven experience building container images
• Working knowledge of container management tools like Docker, Podman, or Kubernetes
• Experience with Linux systems, package management, build systems, or release engineering
• Strong communication skills and ability to own features end-to-end
• Commitment to knowledge sharing and team development
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, STEM field, or equivalent
• Business-level written and spoken English
• 0-7 years of relevant software engineering experience
• Willingness to travel internationally 2-4 times per year

Preferred Qualifications:

• Security-focused mindset with experience investigating vulnerabilities and dependency issues
• Understanding of software supply chain security (SBOMs, signatures, provenance, CVE reports)
• Familiarity with GitOps principles
• Experience with Go or Rust
• Knowledge of building minimal or distroless container images
• Understanding of OCI specifications
• Familiarity with security frameworks such as CIS, NIST, FedRAMP, or DISA STIG
• Open source contributions
• Interest in DevSecOps practices
• Relevant certifications (CKS, DCA, or similar)
