Senior Software Engineer (Data Platform, C++)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential cloud infrastructure organization seeking a Senior Software Engineer with deep C++ expertise to join their Data Platform team in London. This is a critical role building and operating a large-scale distributed storage and processing platform that serves as the backbone for internal and external products.

You will work on a multi-tenant ecosystem running at serious scale—approximately 500 servers, 20,000 CPU cores, and 10 PB of compressed data—supporting everything from business-critical pipelines to large-scale ML training datasets.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Designing and implementing new functionality in the platform's C++ core with production reliability as a primary concern
• Building and evolving platform-level capabilities including multi-cluster architecture, shared primitives, and systems that scale with growing teams and use cases
• Improving the end-to-end platform experience through better APIs, guardrails, debugging workflows, and automation
• Owning production quality through incident response, on-call rotation, root cause analysis, and implementing durable fixes
• Working on projects such as sharded master rollouts, performance optimization for interactive SQL workloads, workflow orchestration systems, and audit trail implementations
• Collaborating with internal stakeholders to clarify requirements, drive prioritization, and make pragmatic trade-offs that maximize impact

The platform integrates distributed storage with transactional semantics, cluster-wide job scheduling, SQL-like data processing, interactive analytics, low-latency NoSQL capabilities, and workflow orchestration—all within a unified system.

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 5+ years of software engineering experience
• Strong C++ skills for writing core systems code (modern C++20, async and multithreaded programming)
• Working knowledge of Python and/or Go for services, tooling, and integration work
• Proven experience developing and/or operating high-load, distributed services in production environments
• Production mindset with ability to use SSH, read logs/metrics/traces, and debug distributed systems behavior
• Solid computer science fundamentals including algorithms, data structures, and concurrency
• Product sense—understanding user needs, prioritizing features, and connecting engineering work to real outcomes

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience with Big Data systems such as Hadoop, Spark, ClickHouse, or similar ecosystems
• Background with multi-tenant platforms, schedulers, resource isolation, quotas, and reliability engineering
• Strong performance engineering skills including profiling, lock contention analysis, and latency/throughput optimization
