Senior Software Engineer, Backend – Data Layer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential process orchestration platform seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Data Layer to join their distributed engineering team. This is a remote position working with a global organization that powers mission-critical automation for hundreds of enterprise clients.

Our client is building the next generation of intelligent process automation, and the Data Layer team sits at the heart of that mission. You'll work on storage and query systems that handle process data at massive scale, spanning relational databases and distributed search infrastructure. This role offers genuine technical depth—reshaping data retention strategies, building streaming pipelines to external systems, and evolving secondary storage to meet growing performance demands.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services for the data layer, working across relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MSSQL) and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch with focus on correctness, performance, and scale
• Own end-to-end delivery of engineering initiatives, partnering with Product Management to translate requirements into solution designs and drive projects to timely, high-quality completion
• Evolve data processing, retention, and exposure patterns so customers can work with their process data efficiently and flexibly
• Improve performance and scalability of secondary storage systems as usage grows, building tooling that simplifies troubleshooting and safe production operations
• Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, investigating data layer production issues in partnership with Support and SRE teams, feeding learnings back into product improvements
• Collaborate across Product, Design, QA, and Support to influence how the data layer evolves to meet customer needs

What We're Looking For

Required:

• At least 7 years of backend engineering experience with strong focus on production data stores
• Deep hands-on experience with both relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, or MSSQL) and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, including practical understanding of query performance, indexing, and data modeling trade-offs
• Proven track record leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end-to-end: solution design, project planning, cross-team coordination, and predictable delivery
• Comfort investigating slow queries, execution plans, and index usage to root-cause data-related production issues
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote-first environment: ability to translate requirements into actionable technical work and provide clear, direct feedback in code review
• Ability and willingness to use the client's product

Preferred:

• Experience building workflow automation or process orchestration software
• Experience building or maintaining CI pipelines
• Understanding of database migration tooling (Liquibase, Flyway) and schema evolution in live systems
