We are seeking a Senior Radiation Safety Engineer to establish and lead the radiation safety framework for a cutting-edge demonstrator facility in Darmstadt.

This role offers the unique opportunity to build safety systems from the ground up for next-generation radiation source technology, working at the intersection of laser physics, high-energy systems, and regulatory compliance. You will be the functional owner of radiation safety across design, construction, commissioning, and operations.

Core Responsibilities

• Establish comprehensive radiation safety governance, procedures, documentation, and review processes for complex high-energy systems
• Design, specify, and validate radiation shielding for advanced laser-driven facilities
• Define and implement radiation monitoring, dosimetry systems, and safety interlocks integrated with facility controls
• Own radiation safety documentation and lead licensing submissions with German regulatory authorities
• Conduct or supervise radiation measurements during commissioning and operational phases
• Serve as or support the Radiation Safety Officer role, including audits and incident investigations
• Lead radiation safety input across design reviews, commissioning, operational readiness, and change management processes
• Act as trusted safety authority communicating radiation risks clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Support deployment concepts for future customer installations

What We're Looking For

Required Technical Expertise:

• Strong expertise in radiation protection, shielding design, and dosimetry—preferably with pulsed neutrons
• Experience with Monte Carlo simulation methods (MCNP, FLUKA, GEANT4, or PHITS) for shielding and dose analyses
• Hands-on experience with dose estimation, radiation monitoring systems, access control, controlled areas, safety interlocks, and commissioning procedures
• Deep understanding of radiation protection principles, regulatory requirements, documentation standards, and authority communication
• Knowledge of control systems and safety interlock integration
• Solid grounding in ALARA principles and radiation measurement techniques
• Ability to communicate with German regulatory authorities in German

Background Examples: Medical or industrial radiation facilities, accelerator systems, high-energy physics environments, X-ray systems, neutron/gamma radiation facilities, or comparable regulated technical settings.
