Senior / Principal Game Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential game development studio seeking a Senior or Principal Game Engineer to join their co-development team in Brighton, UK. This is a hybrid position requiring three days onsite each week, with remote work available for the remaining days.

Our client is an established AAA studio working with multiple partners across the gaming industry. They specialise in player-centric experiences and are known for their commitment to performance, accessibility, and engineering excellence. This role offers the opportunity to work on diverse projects while shaping the systems that players interact with most directly.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and polish gameplay features, UI systems, and core player controls including character movement, camera behaviour, and input handling
• Own technical direction for player experience work across multiple projects, making architectural decisions and guiding solutions from prototype to final delivery
• Serve as a senior technical representative to partner studios, gathering requirements, presenting solutions, and communicating technical trade-offs
• Apply profiling and diagnostic tools to investigate and resolve complex technical issues across gameplay, UI, and engine-level systems
• Mentor engineers across the team, sharing expertise in player experience engineering and building studio capabilities
• Champion code quality, performance, and maintainability through code reviews and setting standards through example

What We're Looking For

Essential qualifications:

• Extensive professional experience developing and shipping games with principal-level technical judgement
• Expert proficiency in C++ and C#, with a commitment to writing clean, maintainable code
• Strong 3D mathematics foundation including linear algebra and geometry for cameras, character movement, and animation systems
• Deep experience developing player-facing systems in Unreal Engine, including Gameplay Framework, UMG/Slate, input and camera systems (strong Unity backgrounds also valued)
• Proven analytical skills with a methodical approach to diagnosing and resolving technical challenges
• Confidence communicating complex technical topics to varied audiences and stakeholders
• Player-focused instinct for what makes games feel responsive and satisfying
• Strong collaboration and communication skills across engineering, design, art, and production disciplines
• Genuine enthusiasm for games and creating high-quality player experiences

Desirable experience:

• Shipping titles on current-generation consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2)
• Professional Unity development alongside Unreal experience
• Custom engine modifications, plugin development, Gameplay Ability System, or working from Unreal Engine source
• Designing and implementing accessible controls, UI, and player options
• Co-development or external development environments working with multiple partners and codebases
