Senior Optics Technician

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential quantum computing organization seeking a Senior Optics Technician to join their optical manufacturing team in Oxford. You will build and commission precision optics and laser assemblies used in advanced quantum systems, working alongside technicians, engineers, and scientists to support system builds, maintenance, and upgrades.

Your work will focus on precision optical assembly, free space alignment, and fibre coupling as you help build and test quantum computing hardware. You will be responsible for technical documentation and maintaining a safe, organized laboratory and workshop environment.

Key responsibilities include:

• Build and commission optical and laser assemblies to exacting specifications
• Support system maintenance and upgrades in collaboration with engineers and scientists
• Handle high precision and delicate components, utilizing microscopes where required
• Follow mechanical and electrical drawings and work instructions, document your work, and test equipment before shipment
• Maintain safe laboratory and workshop practices when working with lasers and optics

What We're Looking For

You will need proven practical laboratory experience with lasers and optics, precision assembly, free space optical alignment, and fibre coupling. You should be comfortable taking ownership of tasks with minimal supervision and have experience testing high-technology equipment before shipment.

You would be a strong candidate if you have:

• Experience assembling and testing scientific instrumentation or working in industrial operations
• Electronic subsystem assembly and fault-finding skills, including continuity testing
• Class 4 laser safety training and familiarity with appropriate personal protective equipment
• Relevant optics or engineering qualifications, or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience
• Experience in scientific support or commercial research environments, with confident IT use

This role is based in Oxford and requires five days on site each week. Due to the nature of the work, candidates must meet applicable export control requirements.
