Senior Mesh Network and MAC Engineer (All Genders)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential defense technology client in Berlin who is building next-generation autonomous platforms for contested environments. Our talent team is searching for a Senior Mesh Network and MAC Engineer to architect critical communication infrastructure that enables robust, self-healing networks under demanding tactical conditions.

This is a rare opportunity to take mathematical models from concept to deployed hardware, working on directional wireless communication systems that solve real-world challenges in highly dynamic multi-node networks.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement MAC protocols and routing algorithms for directional multi-node systems, solving neighbor discovery challenges in narrow-beam environments
• Build dynamic TDMA schedules and beam coordination mechanisms integrated with physical layer and antenna steering systems
• Develop resilient multi-hop relay capabilities supporting high-bandwidth video and control links between mobile platforms over tactical distances
• Create and maintain multi-node Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testbeds with automated logging pipelines to evaluate network join times and topology behaviors
• Take direct ownership of software and firmware modules that bridge theoretical signal processing with real-world hardware execution

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Proven track record designing and shipping mesh networking protocols in commercial or defense products—simulation-only experience does not qualify
• Deep, practical expertise with the Linux networking stack at kernel and packet levels, including live debugging on embedded systems
• Strong understanding of wireless propagation and physical layer realities
• Hands-on experience designing medium-access control schemes or TDMA schedulers
• Radio-literate with demonstrated ability to design MAC schemes

Valued experience:

• Active contributions to open-source routing protocols (batman-adv, olsrd, Babel)
• Professional background at tactical mesh vendors
• Experience with mmWave backhaul systems or directional beamforming technologies
