Senior Legal Counsel – AI and Digital assets

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organisation that is scaling rapidly in the payments infrastructure space. They work with some of the world's largest technology and payments platforms, enabling seamless global commerce across multiple markets and jurisdictions.

Our client is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel with deep expertise in AI and digital assets to join their legal team in London. This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week on-site, working alongside product, engineering, treasury, and commercial teams on cutting-edge payment technologies including stablecoins and agentic AI.

Responsibilities

• Advise on the full product lifecycle for payment products, digital asset initiatives, and stablecoin offerings from concept through global launch
• Review and negotiate commercial agreements including partner contracts and product development arrangements
• Draft and maintain customer-facing legal documentation for new products, including terms and conditions and AI-driven feature disclosures
• Provide regulatory guidance on product features, payment method onboarding, and market expansion covering cross-border data flows, data protection, and payment services regulation
• Serve as the internal expert on AI including agentic AI, addressing liability, governance, data use, tool contracting, and evolving regulatory frameworks
• Advise on digital asset and stablecoin regulatory matters including e-money classification, payment services rules, custody requirements, and cross-border transfer regulations
• Conduct horizon scanning for legal and regulatory developments and support implementation of required changes
• Collaborate with compliance and risk teams to integrate legal considerations into product development and go-to-market planning
• Improve legal processes and explore AI tools to enhance team efficiency
• Manage relationships with external counsel and translate their advice for business stakeholders
• Handle ad hoc legal matters spanning intellectual property, corporate law, and disputes

What We're Looking For

• UK or EU qualified lawyer with 8+ years of experience in financial services, payments, and/or technology sectors
• Strong mix of regulatory, privacy, and commercial legal experience
• Genuine hands-on experience with payments regulation, digital assets including stablecoins, and AI including agentic AI applications
• Working knowledge of financial regulation including payment services regulation across the UK and EU
• Strong expertise advising on data protection and privacy matters (UK GDPR, EU GDPR, cross-border data transfers)
• Comfort with technology sufficient to engage in detailed technical conversations with engineers
• Ability to work independently in ambiguous situations, identifying mitigations rather than just highlighting risks
• Skill in translating complex legal and technical issues into clear business language
• Strong ownership mentality with drive to see complex matters through to completion
